E3 2017: Mario Transforms in New Trailer Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo pulled a new trailer for Super Mario Odyssey out of its sentient hat for E3.

Mario's new powers and suits were on full display in a new trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, shown during Nintendo's E3 Direct presentation. Possession and transformation seem to be this game's central gameplay gimmicks. In the trailer, Mario uses his hat as a weapon, flinging it to cut through vegetation and take down Goombas.

The real trick, however, occurs when Mario tosses his hat onto creatures such as frogs and t-rexes, which allows him to take control over that creature. In other words, you're still playing as Mario, but in the command of seemingly any creature in your path: frogs and dinosaurs, but also Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Bullet Bills, and more.

Super Mario Odyssey arrives on Switch on October 27.
