One million Gamerscore milestone achieved

A dedicated Xbox gamer has become the first person to get a seven-figure Gamerscore. Achievement hunter Raymond "Stallion83" Cox crossed the 1 million mark by playing Titanfall. Aptly, he hit the magic number by earning the game's "I liked a Challenge" achievement.

Microsoft's felt Sega lacked 'enough muscle' for acquisition

Microsoft is a heavyweight in game consoles now, but before it made its mark with enormous controllers and Master Chief, the company was looking into ways to get a foothold. One idea was to purchase an existing company like Sega, but then-CEO Bill Gates felt the house that Sonic built lacked the "muscle" to compete with Sony.

MobyGames Classic: Max Payne community stories

MobyGames Classic: Max Payne community stories

Last Wednesday we added 2001's Max Payne to our growing list of video game classics, presented by MobyGames.com.

Max Payne delighted and surprised many gamers and critics alike when it was released back in 2001 for the PC with its blend of solid 3rd-person shooting and gritty noir-style presentation. The introduction of Bullet Time--which allowed players to slow time to a crawl while dodging and returning enemy fire--was brand new, and quite a huge deal at the time. Comic book-style cut-scenes and some appropriately melodramatic voice-over narration blended with the revenge-themed story to create an experience brimming with as much style as gunplay.

Shacknews remembers the original Xbox

Shacknews remembers the original Xbox

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the original Xbox. While team Microsoft celebrates by offering discounted Black Eyed Peas music videos, the Shacknews team decided to take a look back at our favorite Xbox moments.

Garnett Lee

I wasn't completely sure what to make of the Xbox when it launched. I was still lamenting the fate of the Dreamcast, and wondered how the odd black box with its ridiculous looking controller would fare any better. Yet, there was Dead or Alive 3, and I wanted to believe. Not that it was easy early on. There was Azurik--so bad, and not the sort of go back and chuckle at it bad but outright bad, the tech demo-tuned-fighting game Kakuto Chojin (later to also be the subject of controversy), and Microsoft's lackluster attempts at sports games.

Microsoft celebrates 10 years of Xbox with free Avatar prop

Happy birthday Xbox! You're ten years old now. Who could've imagined that you'd evolve from having the biggest controller in the world... to no controller at all?

A 10 year anniversary is quite a big deal, so how's Microsoft going to celebrate? By giving everyone a free Avatar prop. You can get a digital gift box for your virtual profile, which explodes into fireworks. It may not be a free game, or free Microsoft Points, but at least it's something, right?

'Less than one percent' of Xbox Live users are 'bad apples'

Related Topics – xbox, xbox 360, Microsoft, Kinect, Xbox Live

Has someone ever verbally questioned your sexuality? Has anyone ever yelled lewd insults about your mother, before threatening to kill you? Sadly, the answer is most likely "yes," if you've ever jumped into a match on Xbox Live with your headset on. However, Microsoft's Stephen Toulouse says that the community is improving. Toulouse is in charge of Xbox Live's Policy and Enforcement team, and by his admission, "the cross-section of bad apples we deal with every day is small – typically less than one percent of the overall population."

Xbox marketing shifting focus to become 'an entertainment brand'

Xbox marketing shifting focus to become 'an entertainment brand'

It's no secret that for most of its two-console life cycle, Xbox has primarily attracted hardcore gamers. But through initiatives like Kinect, and its early partnership with Netflix, Xbox is reaching a much broader audience. In a recent blog, Frank Shaw, Microsoft VP of Corporate Communications, discussed the company's intent on making Xbox much more than just a gaming device. "Xbox = entertainment" is the new mantra, and a new campaign will echo that sentiment. "You’ll see Xbox marketed more as an entertainment brand this year," Shaw notes.

With more than 10 million Kinects sold so far, and newfound success with casual gamers, it shouldn't be surprising that the Xbox is becoming increasingly a non-gaming platform. In fact, Shaw notes that 40 percent of all Xbox activity is "non-game," with an average of 30 hours of monthly video playback per system. Expanding its focus beyond gaming is precisely why "you’ve seen us invest in partnerships with ESPN, Netflix and Hulu. That is why we’ve baked social directly into the experience with Xbox Live." Xbox 360 To Get External HD-DVD Drive

Related Topics – xbox, xbox 360, Xbox Live Marketplace

With Chris busy at CES I figured I'd throw up this nugget just in from Microsoft: they are going to be releasing an external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 this year. No specific release date or price point was mentioned in the press release, which also touches on Windows Vista, Windows Live plans and other Micosoft products.

Building on Xbox 360 leadership in high-definition experiences, the company announced plans to deliver a new Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive in 2006. The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form.
In other 360 news, a Fight Night Round 3 demo is now available through the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Xbox 360 Pricing Announced

Related Topics – xbox, xbox 360

Microsoft today officially confirmed Xbox 360 pricing, and after all the rumors it's not surprising to see that Microsoft is indeed going with a HDD-less 360. You'll be able to pick that one up for $299 (it comes with one controller), while an Xbox 360 with a 20 GB hard drive, a wireless controller, a headset and a remote will cost $399. Microsoft also announced the HDD comes preloaded with music, gaming videos and other media, though it didn't specify any of this content. As for the release date? That's still just "Holiday 2005".

Microsoft also announced the price points for over a dozen Xbox 360 accessories, including stand-alone wireless controllers ($50), detachable 20 GB hard drives ($100), headsets ($20) and Xbox 360 faceplates ($20), which allow users to customize their machine. Those hoping to take advantage of the Xbox 360's oft-touted high definition graphics will either need to purchase the $400 bundle or buy separate component cables (which will sell for $40) along with the basic system. The lower-end package will ship with standard AV cables.
According to EuroGamer's article about the announcement the UK versions will be £209.99 and £279.99 while the rest of Europe is paying a premium with a direct USD to EURO conversion (€299.99 and €399.99)
