Destiny's PlayStation content exclusive for a year

We already knew that Activision and Sony had reached a deal to provide some exclusive content to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of Destiny, the company's forthcoming sci-fi first-person shooter from the team at Bungie. What we didn't know, however, was how long the content would remain exclusive. Thanks to a listing from Amazon this morning, however, we seem to have a better idea.

The Tester Season 3 begins February 7

The Tester Season 3 begins February 7

Ready or not, The Tester Season 3 is happening. Sony's video game-themed reality series returns for a third year, this time with a whole lot more at stake. The winner of this season's competition won't be relegated into a QA position. Instead, the winner will get a job as a Production Associate at Santa Monica Studio, $5000, a 55" 3D TV, a PS3, and a Ford Focus Titanium.

With unemployment rates still high, winning this reality series may be the best chance for 20-something year old competitors to land a job in the gaming industry. Who will win the competition? Will it be J-Tight, egoraptor, Skyd1ddy, or Ashichan?

NFL Sunday Ticket coming to PS3

NFL Sunday Ticket coming to PS3

While the games press is focused squarely on Europe, SCEA took some time to announce a megaton for Americans. Sony has partnered with DirecTV to bring its NFL Sunday Ticket subscription service to the PS3. Best of all, the service will be available even for those that don't currently have access to DirecTV. That means PS3 owners will be able to watch every "out-of-market" Sunday game.

Sony acquires Infamous dev Sucker Punch

Sony acquires Infamous dev Sucker Punch

"If you liked it, then you should've put a ring on it."

Apparently, Sony really liked inFamous 2, as it's finally acquired long-time partner Sucker Punch Productions--the studio behind the Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises. Although the Bellevue-based developer has enjoyed a twelve year partnership with Sony, it has always been an independent developer. According to the announcement, "day-to-day operations will continue to be run by the current management team and company founders."

Sony faces insurance crisis after PSN outage

Fifty five. That's the number of class-action lawsuits supposedly filed in the US against Sony for its handling of a security breach that took down the PlayStation Network for over a month. Since then, the company has come under scrutiny, and has been under investigations by both state and federal regulators. The fallout is expected to cost Sony hundreds of millions of dollars... and one of its insurers wants no part in offering coverage.

Sony settles with PS3 hacker Geohot

Sony's legal battle with George 'Geohot' Hotz, the hacker who exposed the PlayStation 3's root key, has ended. The two announced today in a joint statement that a settlement has been reached.

Hotz had figured out how to run unauthorised code on Sony's console, allowing it to run 'homebrew' software but also--not Hotz's goal--pirated games. Unsurprisingly, Sony was none too happy with this and sued. The terms of the settlement are not disclosed, beyond the fact that Hotz "consented to a permanent injunction." Read more »

Activision CEO's Price Drop Suggestion Inappropriate, Says SCEA CEO

Responding to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's comments that Sony and Microsoft need to drop the prices of their respective systems to $199 within the next two years, SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton has labeled Kotick's analysis as inappropriate and unwelcome.

"I would never venture to suggest what software publishers should price their software at," Tretton told The Mercury News. "I don't think it's appropriate for them to suggest what hardware should be priced at." Read more »

God of War II Director Will Leave SCEA, Sony Confirms Sequel

God of War II (PS2) director Cory Barlog will leave his position at SCEA Santa Monica soon, a Sony rep told 1up today. In mentioning Barlog's resignation, the Sony rep also confirmed the company's plans for a God of War III on PlayStation 3, presumably without Barlog's assistance. "We can confirm that Cory Barlog, Game Director for God of War II, is leaving the SCEA SM Studio and we are grateful for his work and creative vision for the critically acclaimed God of War franchise," the spokesperson told 1up. "Moving forward, we are confident in the God of War team, as they are an extremely talented group of people that are passionate about the franchise and dedicated to creating even more epic content with God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PSP and God of War III for PS3." It's unknown if Barlog and Sony will continue to collaborate, as former SCEA Santa Monica developer and God of War (PS2) creator David Jaffe will with Jaffe's new Sony endorsed studio Eat, Sleep, Play. In an interview with Shacknews earlier this year, Barlog indicated he was happy at SCEA Santa Monica, saying the God of War team was "one of the best teams I've ever worked with" and that he'd like to "continue to make many, many games" with his fellow developers there. The upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus for PSP is in development by Daxter (PSP) developer Ready at Dawn Studios and will retail in spring 2008.

Dave Karraker Leaves SCEA, Takes to the Skyy

Related Topics – Sony, SCEA

Sony Computer Entertainment of America's senior director of corporate communications Dave Karraker today announced he will leave the company this Friday for a position at vodka distiller Skyy Spirits. "I will be leaving SCEA on September 7 to pursue a global opportunity closer to my home and in another industry where I have extensive experience," Karraker told Shacknews in a sobering e-mail. Karraker has been the lead PR manager at SCEA over the past year, overseeing the launch of the PlayStation 3. A replacement for his position has not yet been announced. "I have enjoyed immensely my tenure at SCEA and think the company and its brands are very well positioned to have an exceptional holiday and a very bright future," continued Karraker. "I appreciate all the support of the media and analysts I have worked with and look forward to following the industry as a gamer."
