Bayonetta 2 launching in 2014 on Wii U

It is still pretty weird that Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive but hey, not weirder than a game where a witch fights angels with her gun-heeled shoes and giant legs made of her own hair. It'll launch in 2014, Nintendo confirmed during its E3 briefing today, and a new trailer with gameplay snippets shows it's certainly every bit as delightfully odd as ever.

Metal Gear Rising DLC trailer unleashes Blade Wolf

Not every game could feature a robotic talking wolf with a chainsaw on its back, but then, not every game can be Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Konami released a trailer for the newly-launched Blade Wolf downloadable content yesterday, showcasing exactly how out-and-out bonkers Platinum Games can get.

Look at Metal Gear Rising's silly DLC

Tomorrow, PS3 owners will be able to pick up their free exclusive DLC for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The free content includes thirty additional VR missions, promising zany experiences that may have been too wacky for the main campaign (unbelievable as that may be).

A new Japanese trailer reveals some of the missions you'll embark on. You'll be able to play as the Dwarf Gekko once again in the first add-on mission. In another, you'll be gunning down enemies as Raiden. Another stage seems to take the perspective of a 2D side-scroller.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance review: ripped apart

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance review: ripped apart

There's few franchises that garner the same kind of respect Metal Gear does. Over its 25 year legacy, it's repeatedly defined landmark moments in gaming. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a lot to live up to. Not only must it adhere to the same quality expected of the franchise, but it must make real what many fans have been waiting for: a game where you get to play as one of the series' deadly sword-wielding cyborg ninjas.

Platinum Games, developer of cult action hits like Bayonetta and Vanquish, clearly have the chops to make a great action game. But, can they make a great game that lives up to the Metal Gear name? Almost, but not quite.

Platinum Games interested in Darksiders franchise

Yesterday we finally got word of where THQ's franchises were going, as the company's intellectual properties were sold off piece-meal to various publishers. One notable exception, however, was Vigil Games and the Darksiders franchise, which went unclaimed. The series' fortunes look bleak, but Platinum Games has signaled an interest in saving it.

Stabby spin-off Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance could have starred a very different cyborg ninja, Hideo Kojima has said: series veteran Gray Fox. The Metal Gear creator has said he fancied seeing the former FOXHOUND member with those fabulous new shiny metal buttocks, but as he was going more hands-off with Revengeance he let the team go with their pick of Raiden.

Anarchy Reigns review: flair for fighting

Anarchy Reigns review: flair for fighting

There's been an air of anticipation for Anarchy Reigns, understandable given its baffling delays here in North America. Now that it has finally arrived, Platinum's 3D brawler thoroughly scratches the itch for off-the-wall mayhem, even if some of its ambitious multiplayer efforts fall a bit short.

How stealth came back into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

How stealth came back into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Something I found surprising in my time with the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was the greater emphasis on stealth. Sure, the game offers plenty of Platinum's unique brand of action, but it still retains a good deal of MGS-style sneaking around. After the game proved me wrong, I asked if the addition of stealth mechanics was the intention from the beginning or whether it was tossed in later to address fan concerns.

"In the beginning, we wrapped around the core concept of just having Raiden moving forward," Platinum's Atsushi Inaba answered, speaking through a translator. "It was based on sole action. But looking back, it would have been very dull and very centered around just cutting."

How cyborgs helped Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance avoid censorship

How cyborgs helped Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance avoid censorship

Thanks to its unique cutting mechanic, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance certainly leaves a lasting impression. By slicing enemies into pieces, Platinum Games' upcoming action game is one of the most violent games ever created. Certainly, that's cause for concern, especially in countries like Japan where anti-violence censorship is more commonplace.

Oddly, one way of circumventing strict restrictions on gore is to avoid violence on humans. By having players fight cyborgs exclusively, the team has figured a way to make a violent game that won't be banned in Japan.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance preview: a Solid legacy

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance preview: a Solid legacy

When Platinum Games was attached to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I had little doubt it could be a potentially great action game. But, I didn't think it could be a real Metal Gear game, especially as its focus was taken away from stealth. After playing the first few hours of the game, I realized I was wrong. The action in Revengeance not only stands up to Platinum's other hits, but the game carries on the stealth legacy of its Solid predecessors.
