Nintendo: layoffs not worth morale loss

While no decent person is ever pleased to see layoffs in the video games industry, they're generally accepted as part of the way it currently runs. Not so at Nintendo, company president Satoru Iwata has said.

Pleasantly, Nintendo's belief is that while layoffs will help finances in the short term, people who justifiably fear losing their jobs will make worse games.

New game releases of July 1-7

For some reason or another, everyone's being very coy about what they're releasing next week. Or perhaps almost nothing is coming out. We're getting the PC edition of gore 'em up Mortal Kombat, drive 'em up Trackmania 2 Valley, vamp 'em up Dark (delayed at short notice from last week), a Wii U re-release of fly 'em up Pilotwings, and potentially some exciting mysteries. Who knows?

3DS StreetPass to meet people through WiFi hotspots

How often do you take your Nintendo 3DS out StreetPassing with you? Less than Nintendo would hope, evidently. It's adding a new way to meet people on StreetPass in North America and Europe, simply by visiting a Nintendo Zone WiFi hotspot that someone else has been near at some point.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate preview: shadow of a doubt

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate preview: shadow of a doubt

Batman: Arkham Origins may be headed up by a new team while the series creator is up to mysterious doings, but it bears the general hallmarks of Rocksteady's own work. The handheld spin-off Blackgate, by comparison, is a wholly different animal, borrowing pieces of its elder siblings and attempting to fit them onto a handheld in a cohesive way.

Mighty Switch Force 2 blazes onto 3DS eShop June 11

WayForward-developed eShop-exclusive platformer Mighty Switch Force is getting a sequel. The aptly titled Mighty Switch Force 2 is coming to 3DS next week, and its debut trailer sees the land of Tangent City set aflame. Cyborg heroine Patricia Wagon must exchange her police badge for a fire helmet and help put the blazing infernos out, using her new water-squirting backpack. In addition to dousing fires and defeating enemies, Wagon can use the new water-spraying mechanic to solve all-new puzzles. WayForward's description promises "new puzzle types, weapons, enemies, unlocks, and a truly epic soundtrack," while retaining the block-pushing element from the first game.

Shin Megami Tensei 4 trailer shows a samurai's duties

Shin Megami Tensei 4 trailer shows a samurai's duties

Becoming a fledgling samurai in Shin Megami Tensei 4 sounds pleasant, but what responsibilities does an initiate have? Cleaning shoes? Answering phones? A new gameplay trailer shows a samurai's duties are far more of the 'wearing a cool wrist computer' and 'slaying demons' variety, thankfully.

Putty Squad trailer shows reimagined classic

Remember that old stuff? Well it's coming back a bit newer. In this case, we're talking Putty Squad, an updated take on the classic platformer from 1994. System 3 has talked idly about the game for several years, including aborted plans for it to be a European Vita launch title, but today dropped a trailer and word that it's coming to a whole heap of platforms.

Why Ace Attorney 5 is download-only in the US

Why Ace Attorney 5 is download-only in the US

How pleasant that Capcom this week announced a western release for courtroom thriller Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, but how curious that it'll only be available via download in the 3DS eShop. It's a popular series, isn't it? Not enough to justify a retail release here too, Capcom says.

Scribblenauts Unmasked features over 2000 DC Comics characters and items

Scribblenauts Unmasked features over 2000 DC Comics characters and items

Where do you go after you've given players the ability to create nearly any object and modify it with nearly any adjective? The Scribblenauts franchise could have hit a wall with its latest release, Unlimited. However, this year's iteration breaks through that wall by enhancing its library with one of the most comprehensive compendiums of the DC Universe ever.

Scribblenauts Unmasked for 3DS, Wii U, and PC promises to feature all the DC Comics characters--and not just characters from the New 52. "Even characters that appeared in one panel in one comic in 1976" can be found in the game, Warner Bros promises.
