Editorial: Assassin's Creed needs more than Fassbender

Editorial: Assassin's Creed needs more than Fassbender

Video games and films are not generally on good terms. Hollywood has tried to crack the nut over and over, but the infamously terrible examples of adaptations continue to mount. Producers still haven't figured out what makes a successful video game to film adaptation, but we have a pretty good idea of what doesn't. And as much as I enjoy the work of Michael Fassbender, his name alone isn't enough to inspire confidence in the Assassin's Creed film project.

Uncharted movie 'going back' to the game

Uncharted movie 'going back' to the game

Fans were up in arms when they heard about David O. Russell's Uncharted film adaptation about a family "that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice." Just like in the games! Right?

Since then, Russell has left the project, with Neil Burger taking over the Hollywood adaptation of Naughty Dog's adventure series. Thankfully, Burger won't follow the footsteps of his predecessor and will, instead, focus on what actually makes the series so beloved by its fans. "There’s a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it."

Uncharted movie gets new director

The Uncharted movie has found a new director, reports Variety. The film is now being helmed by Neil Burger, director of Limitless and The Illusionist. Burger is reportedly reworking the project, and was chosen after he proposed a hewing closer to the plot of the first game.

That should be welcome news to those who didn't like former director David O. Russell's take. Russell had brought along big talent like Mark Wahlberg for the lead. Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were also on-board for a plot that revolved around Drake's family -- and had very little to do with any of the games. It's unclear now if Wahlberg will still take on the role now that Russell has left due to creative differences.

Mass Effect gets animated next summer

Mass Effect gets animated next summer

The Mass Effect series is already pretty cinematic, but it's about to get even more so. BioWare and Electronic Arts announced a deal with FUNimation Entertainment today, to produce a Mass Effect anime movie. Work on the movie has already begun, and it's due in stores (not theaters) in summer of 2012. T.O Entertainment, which is also handling the Dragon Age anime, has signed on as co-producer.

The movie will take place within the Mass Effect universe, but the annoucment doesn't mention the series protagonist Shepard. More likely, this movie will expand the universe like the series of Drew Karpyshyn-penned novels, or the movies EA has financed to cross-promote Dead Space and Dante's Inferno. Read more »
