Rage was a mess when it came out on PC in late 2011, and while patches improved the game, it was still frustrating to play. id Software's John Carmack apologized to QuakeCon attendees on how "badly we handled the game in the PC space."

With QuakeCon almost upon us--August 2-5 in Dallas, Quakeamaniacs--we finally have the full lineup of panels of men talking about things. Along with the classic John Carmack keynote, QuakeCon 2012 will have a look back at Looking Glass Studios, the sorely-missed creator of Thief and System Shock, a live recording of the Idle Thumbs podcast with its classic lineup, and not one, but two panels about mods.

QuakeCon to feature Dishonored demo, Carmack keynote

QuakeCon 2012 is only a few weeks away now, and id Software has shared more details on the upcoming event. Namely, a high-profile game demo and a few panelists have been announced, including John Carmack Marty Stratton from id, Ted Price from Insomniac, Chet Faliszek and Tom Leonard from Valve, and journalist Geoff Keighley.

QuakeCon 2012 tournaments announced

We've been waiting for the schedule for QuakeCon 2012 to make an appearance, and finally some tidbits are showing up. Bethesda has revealed four tournaments and $30,000 in prize money for attendees who wish to participate at the event on August 2-5 in Dallas.

Rage: The Scorchers rated

Could DLC be in the works for id Software's open-world shooter, Rage? A new PEGI rating makes it sound very likely.

A new listing by the European ratings bureau details Rage: The Scorchers, and it's been rated for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Like the original game, it's classified as an "Action" game, rated 18+ (for obvious reasons).

Doom 3 BFG releases October 16th

The enhanced re-release of Doom 3 is coming just in time for Halloween, publisher Bethesda Softworks has announced. The "BFG Edition" of id's classic FPS will be available on October 16 on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The console versions will retail for $40, while the PC version will be $30.

BFG adds Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, and "The Lost Mission"--all optimized in 3D, 5.1 surround sound, achievements, improved rendering and lighting, and a new checkpoint save system. There's also an armor-mounted flashlight, "allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time."

Doom 3 remastered with BFG Edition for PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Why, it seems like only yesterday that we were all jazzed about the launch of Doom 3, but at almost eight years old (eight!) it's now being remastered for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The BFG Edition of Doom 3 includes its expansion pack Resurrection of Evil, a new seven-level mission, the first two Doom games, and changes including... an armour-mounted flashlight!

Wolfenstein 3D free browser version marks 20th anniversary

What did you get yer old pal B.J. Blazkowicz for his birthday? Come now, surely you didn't forget that it's the 20th anniversary of Wolfenstein 3D's launch this month? Luckily, id Software and Bethesda haven't, and have given us all a free browser-based version of its seminal shooter. John Carmack has also given a director's commentary, full of the usual fascinating Carmackchat.

A hefty Quake Live update rocket-jumped out yesterday, with new maps and modes for Premium subscribers of id's free-to-play version of Quake 3. "That's all good and well for Richie Rich and Audrey Affluent," you may mutter into your bucket of potato soup, "but what about me?" Good news, wretched proles, premium perks are open to all players this week.

Rage 'Campaign Edition' now available on Mac

It's taken a few decades, but Mac is finally becoming home to the latest video game tech. The preferred OS of turtleneck-wearing Apple users supports Source Engine, Unreal Engine 3, and now, idTech 5. Aspyr and id Software have announced a Mac version of Rage, and it's available right now.

Dubbed the "Campaign Edition," the Mac version of Rage includes the entire single-player experience, enhanced with content that was formerly exclusive to the "Anarchy Edition" of the game. The Mac version also includes the "Wasteland Sewers Missions."

QuakeCon 2012 dated for August 2-5

QuakeCon, id Software's free annual mega-LAN party and face-shooting celebration, is to return to Dallas, Texas this year on August 2-5. What exactly there will be to do there has yet to be revealed, but expect talks, tournaments, playing unreleased games, and the sorts of shenanigans you'd expect from a hall filled with several thousand geeks.

id Software hit with layoffs; future projects continue 'unabated'

Bethesda Softworks has confirmed circulating reports that id Software has been hit with layoffs. It's still unclear how many jobs were affected by the cuts.

Creators of such classic franchises as Doom and Wolfenstein, id Software recently launched Rage--the developer's first new intellectual property since 1996's Quake.

id Software last night released the engine source code for Doom 3 under a GPL3 license, letting all and sundry get their hands dirty and bend it to their will. You can download the code here at Shacknews. Let the coding commence!
