Alpha Protocol PC DRM Explained, Will Be Removed Eventually

Publisher Sega has explained the ins and outs of the 'Uniloc: SoftAnchor' DRM scheme chosen for Obsidian Entertainment's espionage RPG Alpha Protocol, covering what it means for players and revealing plans to eventually remove the DRM altogether.

Uniloc: SoftAnchor will allow five active installations of Alpha Protocol at any given time, which can be deactivated either by uninstalling them or via a website. Online activation will be required only when the game is first installed, with the option to activate by "saving a file and transporting it to the computer that does have web access." Read more »

Trine PC Patch Removes Copy Protection

Trine developer Frozenbyte has released patch 1.06 for its delightful physics-driven action platformer on PC, available now in a 14MB download from FileShack.

The removal of copy protection from North American and European editions of Trine is chief among the patch's changes, which also include oodles of bug fixes.

The Settlers 7 DRM Issues Still Not Fully Resolved

Following up on its original story, Eurogamer has learned that Ubisoft is still experiencing issues with its multiplayer servers and DRM for The Settlers 7.

"Settlers 7 players have encountered difficulties playing the game over the [Easter] holiday weekend due to issues with servers that do matchmaking in multiplayer mode and that keep track of profiles, campaign progression and stats in both solo and multi modes," said Ubisoft to Eurogamer. Ubisoft Offers Free Goodies as Compensation for PC DRM Downtime

Ubisoft is offering goodies including free games and downloadable content to gamers affected by the denial of service attack against its DRM authentication servers which left many unable to play Silent Hunter 5 or Assassin's Creed 2 on PC, Kotaku reports.

Some gamers are being offered a choice of Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy's HAWX, Tom Clancy's EndWar or Heroes Over Europe for free, while others are receiving the three Assassin's Creed 2 bonus quests previously exclusive to its Special Edition. Command and Conquer 4 Having DRM Problems

According to Eurogamer, Electronic Arts' Command & Conquer 4 is reportedly having playability issues due to its DRM scheme, which requires a persistent Internet connection. The issues are similar to the ones Ubisoft has been facing with the PC version of Assassin's Creed II, which also requires a persistent net connection.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC Patched; SecuROM DRM Removed from Steam Version

DICE patched Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with numerous bug-fixes and UI improvements (full list below). The patch for the Steam version of the game is still forthcoming pending some additional testing.

Thankfully, multiplayer servers have not been patched so Steam users will be able to play with non-Steam users despite not having the latest client version. SecuROM CD/DVD copy protection will also be removed from the Steam version, which has no disc. Read more »

Stardock Reveals Impulse Reactor for Developers

At last year's GDC, publisher and developer Stardock revealed GOO, or Game Object Obfuscation, which would allow gamers to resell digital game in addition to functioning as DRM. In 2009, Stardock revealed Impulse::Reactor, a toolset similar to Valve's Steamworks, for PC games, which was shown off at GDC 2010.

Impulse::Reactor uses GOO as DRM, but requires no client to operate. Games utilizing Reactor wouldn't even need to be bundled with Impulse, Stardock's digital distribution platform. Furthermore, these games could be sold at retail or even on other digital distribution platforms like Steam, Direct2Drive, etc. Read more »

Assassin's Creed 2 DRM Tweaked in First PC Patch, While Crackers Reportedly Break DRM Outright

While Ubisoft Montreal's open-world murder simulator Assassin's Creed 2 won't hit North American PCs until March 16, a patch has already been issued with changes including a tweaking of the controversial DRM scheme that requires players be online.

Rather than being kicked back to the last checkpoint should their connection drop out--as was originally the case--players will be able to resume the game "from the exact same point" when they reconnect. The 19MB patch is over on FileShack now. Read more »

Supreme Commander 2 Demo Arrives on Steam, Steamworks DRM Confirmed

Supreme Commander 2, Chris Taylor's RTS follow-up to 2007's Supreme Commander, will be using Valve's Steamworks program for its DRM. All copies of Supreme Commander 2, digitally obtained or purchased in out-dated box form, will require an installation of Steam for validation.

Additionally, a demo of the title is now available for download through Steam ahead of the game's March 2, 2010 release date. Give it a try and if you like it go ahead and pre-order it on Steam. You'll save yourself $5. The Xbox 360 version is set to release on March 18, 2010.

The Settlers 7 Gets More DRM Details, New Trailer, Digital-Only Gold Edition

The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom publisher Ubisoft has announced a 'Gold Edition' of Blue Byte's city-building strategy and released a new trailer covering its 'Victory Points' system, while further details have surfaced of its implentation of Ubisoft's new DRM.

The $60 download-only Gold Edition boasts an "exclusive" map, original soundtrack and extra castle customisation options "including a gate, balcony, bay, gargoyle and two windows," hitting PC and Mac on March 23 alongside the $50 regular edition. Read more »

Metro 2033 Uses Steamworks on PC

Valve Software's Steamworks suite will power all PC copies of 4A's post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2033, Valve and publisher THQ announced today.

Steamworks will give provide "auto-updating, Steam Achievements, Steam support for in-game DLC, and more" while requiring Metro 2033 be played through Steam.

Based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 is a moody shooter with RPG elements set in the subways and surface of a frozen post-apocalyptic Moscow. Read more »
