Alien: Isolation preview: extra terrifying

Alien: Isolation preview: extra terrifying

There's a sense of dread looming around every corner. With every step you take, you hear a clanging sound overhead, along with a haunting screech. You think you can stand still and simply hope it just wanders by, but your heavy breathing gives your location away. There's nothing you can do to stop it. It can hear you. It can sense you. It can practically taste you. And before you can let out a blood-curdling scream, the Xenomorph leaps out from the shadows and pierces you right through the chest, as it howls in victory.

That's the atmosphere that persists through Alien: Isolation, the latest take on the populat sci-fi franchise from Sega and The Creative Assembly. But unlike certain other attempts at the franchise, this game appears to know what a Xenomorph should be. It should be powerful, swift, brutal, and above all else, it should be frightening. And there was no shortage of fear when Shacknews went hands-on with the game at GDC 2014.

Alien: Isolation trailer extols unscripted AI

Alien: Isolation trailer extols unscripted AI

"As soon as the player can predict a pattern in the Alien, it stops being scary," Alien: Isolation designer Gary Napper says in a new video developer diary. "Depending on how cautious players are, we've seen encounters ... last well over 30 minutes in some cases, and this just can't be done with scripted behavior." Gosh. The video also touches on how the creature looks, moves, and hunts dear young Amanda Ripley.

Creative Assembly takes its lumps over Rome 2 camel DLC

The Creative Assembly has faced some backlash in recent days over its latest downloadable content for Total War: Rome 2. How Alien: Isolation invokes more horror from one alien

How Alien: Isolation invokes more horror from one alien

The next Aliens game from Sega takes a decidely different approach than last year's Colonial Marines. Whereas you had to engage hordes of aliens, The Creative Assembly pits players against a lone xenomorph in Alien: Isolation. According to lead designer Gary Napper, the intelligent behavior of the creature should be more than enough to keep players terrified.

Total War: Rome II invading Linux and living rooms

Total War: Rome II invading Linux and living rooms

Total War is one of the PC series which seemed destined to stay on PC with mice and keyboards, too big and complex to make work well on controllers. Not any longer. Developer The Creative Assembly has been won over by Valve's Steam Controller, enough to bring Total War: Rome II to SteamOS and, by extension, all of Linux.
