Morning Discussion

This Monday I do hope our American readers enjoyed their festival of explosives and meat, and that our Canadians have finally recovered from their Canada Day hangovers.

Lacking any national celebration of my own this weekend, I played the Source mod NeoTokyo. I rarely enjoy tactical shooters but NeoTokyo has won me with over its fun CTF mechanic, beautiful aesthetic, enjoyable teamwork, and oodles of polish. I must say I'm impressed. It's available on FileShack if you fancy a future Tokyo tactical treat.

Gaylord apparently isn't taking reservations yet. Maybe noon... or next week :(

Good thing we're not having one of those QCons where all the planning comes down to the last minute and people have to pay ass-rape prices for plane tickets because things can't be reliably nailed down ahead of time

The dates were set a long time ago, changing the venue in the same area has nothing to do with plane tickets. The Gaylord is a far better location anyway.

I guess it is better in that it has worse parking, is out in BFE, has nothing within walking distance that isn't over priced hotel food, has strict alcohol rules and security guards, and just sucks in general.

          July 6, 2009 7:31 AM

Well those plane tickets won't help much if you don't get a hotel room and they're even less likely to be refundable than a hotel booking.

I've never had any problems with parking there, you can take the free bus to the nearby mall and eat there if you are so worried about cheap food. The reservations for the Gaylord haven't opened yet through the Quakecon website...The two years that they had the event at the Gaylord were the best Quakecon events I've ever been to and I've been to 5 of them, this year being my sixth. The anatole wasn't impressive in any way, had nothing foodwise after 12ish and was still being built. The Gaylord has a cafe right outside of the event hall that stays open all night long which was better than overpriced stale domino's pizza. I really wasn't looking forward to the anatole this year and was very happy when they announced the change in venue. I'm also going to this thing with my wife, and there are far more things for her to do at the Gaylord than the anatole. With the Quakecon rate, the rooms should be around $130. If the cost is too high, find roommates. I highly doubt that they will run out of hotel rooms very fast. If you've already spent money on plane tickets, you should be smart enough to check the Quakecon site every day so you can get a hotel reservation right away.

The choice of hotel is irrelevant - it's the mismanagement of the event that is at issue.

I mean the hotel is important - people booked flights because they'd booked hotels first.

I had a hotel room at the Anatole, I canceled...it cost me nothing....I would also get a plane ticket before I ever get a hotel room, the plane tickets usually cost more. You can always get a room somewhere, and I have never made a reservation at a hotel and not been able to cancel without a full refund. If you used some weird third party system that makes you pay no matter what, then you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Also the event is run by volunteers who get paid nothing, idsoftware just foots the bill. For a free weeklong event, I'm pretty damn impressed every year.

Rumblings on the Forum is that Hilton said either pick new dates, take up less space or find a new hotel. So they found a new hotel.

I would rather take a yearly event over any single conference but I suppose if your business is hurting enough you'll take the quick fix and try and repair it another year.

Anatole is apparently a weird one anyway.

A friend of mine on QC staff told me that they weren't allowed to hang anything from the ceiling in the BYOC room.

                  Reason? Union regulations.

As in, the Anatole doesn't own the ceiling in the room. The union owns it (the ceiling union, I guess).

So anything that had to be hung from the ceiling had to wait for a union employee to come and do it. Which was expensive. And they were apparently hit or miss with regards to availability and slow as hell.

As a result they had to engineer bizarre cabling solutions involving wire mesh baskets which didn't require mounting on the ceiling.

That also jives with the other rumor I've heard

          1. Gaylord kicks QuakeCon out for various reasons (drunken idiot gamers, stoner idiot gamers, not enough return on investment compared to the TD Jakes conferences, etc.)
          2. QuakeCon moves to Anatole
          3. Bottom falls out of the economy
          4. Gaylord asks QuakeCon to come back because they're desperate now
          5. QuakeCon sticks with Anatole, who didn't tell them to fuck off
          6. Anatole tells QuakeCon to fuck off
          7. QuakeCon returns to Gaylord

The Hilton Anatole to me always felt like that store in the mall where your grandmother buys blouses.

It wasn't a horrible place but the Gaylord is soooooo much nicer it's not even funny. To say nothing of the fact that it's 100% indoors so you don't have to melt in the August heat going from one place to another.

2007 was mostly games in the middle (like Left 4 Dead and Enemy Territory) with hardware vendors on the outside (Logitech, Dell and Nvidia). Oh with tournament play at one end and a rocket ship somewhere in the middle.

Gaylord is indeed an awesome place, but the problem a number of people have with it is that the restaurants and so forth are pretty expensive. Especially when considering how a number of people try to get by as cheaply as possible.

Do people still sleep at their machines at QuakeCon?

I didn't even bring my machine. I would if I had a decent laptop but I don't. I still had a decent enough time though. Dallas is a nice city, the shackmeet is pretty cool, and just watching the exhibits was good enough.
