In the chatty changes thread, when it was mentioned that posts would survive for only 24 hours from the time of their root posting, I thought it might be better if after the 24 hours, if the thread is still active, it should survive another hour or two. If it gets posted to again, it gets another stay of execution until it's actually been dead for an hour, then it dies forever off the main chatty.
This way old thread would still die generally after 24 hours and stay dead but if there happens to be a particularly engaging thread, it sticks around until it's died down a bit.
Had this concept been considered before? Are there reasons this would be inferior to the hard limit of 24 hours of thread life?

I like threads dying after 24 hours, but I think if they get enough (unique) replies in the 23rd hour of its life, it should get a boost of an additional hour. This would prevent people exploiting it and doing "bump" replies just to keep it alive. It would basically need a certain number of uniques to stay alive for another hour. This means it needs a certain amount of unique posters, people who have replied to the thread earlier can count, but if they reply during the last hour they only count as one "unique" no matter the amount of replies they make in the last hour.
So say you have a thread that is on it's 23'rd hour, and 1 person responds in that last hour. The thread will die as normal when it hits 24 hours. But if 5 people respond in that last hour (for example, the number could be more or less) it gets extended another hour. The maximum amount of time this can be done is a total of 12 times (could be more, but there should definitely be a hard limit), bringing it to 36 hours alive.
What this insures is that anytime a thread gets bumped for another hour of life it will only be because it is a lively thread. Also if anyone replies in the last hour with just "bump" or something similar that post should be nuked and not counted towards the unique replies. Basically encourage only real discussions get bumped an extra hour. By using the uniques system it won't get abused, and probably prevent silly threads like Fukung threads from lasting longer than 24 hours.
