1. Google got it wrong. They have little to no control over their product. All carriers have Android and the fate of your device, if you choose to buy one is up to three separate companies. Google, the manufacturer, and the carrier. Google must push out updates as they see fit, but you may never see them. The Manufacturer must update the OS/Firmware for you device, get it approved by the carrier, and then it gets to you. Everyone between Google and you gets to shit up the software in their own way before it gets to you. Example: Droid by Motorola on Verizon.
2. Apple got two things right. First was giving all the notoriously horrible carriers the middle finger and telling them they would not have any control over the hardware or software, only the services they provide and the cost of that service. AT&T was dieing and the only carrier willing to relinquish control enough that Apple agreed to go with them. Apple designs and manufactures the hardware and writes the software for it. They have complete control and you will receive multiple updates for at least two years for your device.
