I was tempted to try it to play some new maps, but from what I can see in the map browser, it looks like no one is playing premium maps. I don't want to pay for it only to find out that every premium map server is empty. Anyone know if this is the case?

There are advantages to diversity. One is, when people get tired of playing the two gametypes out of three that are offered, they can still play the (at the time) $50 game they bought. We're seeing some of those same initial, loyal players saying there's nothing drawing them back to the servers in the droves that once occupied retail servers. Why? I think it has to do with that lack of gametype diversity.
If you remember, there was a DM game development war, who provides the best DM experience? Was it id or UT? I think id may have been best in DM, in terms of providing a "pure, uncluttered" experience. What's after DM? CTF of course, but then what's after that? How good does it get? id fractionated their gamemodes - a poor choice but necessary to hit a release date of Dec 1999; TA came out a year later, 10 days after UT99. As I said earlier, I think id sacrificed a complete and competitive package to get to market first. There was a huge demand for the answer to "what's after DM and CTF", and it's still making money. As far as I can tell, Quake Live is trying to make money.
I think it's safe to say most of the customers who bought Q3 and UT99 were not honing skills for DM competition.
