* iron is roughly half as common as coal in layers where both are present, but it only appears below sea level
* coal can appear anywhere that rock can, including above sea level
* gold and diamonds are very uncommon
* diamond tools will not sustain themselves. 1 diamond drop per ore mined, 1024 uses in a diamond pick, needs 3 diamonds, thus requires viewing ~4500 blocks which means breaking/mining over 1100 with a 25% mining pattern. If you used a diamond shovel (1 diamond) and all the diamond ore was surrounded by dirt or gravel or sand, you can sustain, but that isn't how you'll find diamond ore. Thus, the only use for diamond tools is to mine obsidian or other blocks that cannot be mined without diamond.
* iron tools will not sustain themselves. 3 iron = over 800 blocks viewed, or 200 broken/mined with a 25% pattern. 1 iron pickaxe will only break 128 blocks.
* mine-cart tracks, which require 6 iron per 16 track pieces, will require you view over 1600 layer-10 blocks per 16 track, or 100 blocks per track piece you build.
