Though, if I could pick up a DOCSIS 3.0 modem that doesn't suck for $50, that seems like a decent idea.

During that period of several months, the internet would randomly drop for several minutes at a time. Numerous calls were placed and techs visited the house over two dozen times, but nobody could ever figure it out because the connection was looked absolutely stellar outside of those few minutes... until one day when yet another tech was at the house.
The tech took a look at the rented modem, sighed, and said he needed to replace it. Why? Because the rented modem wasn't supported on the network anymore... and hadn't been for several months. Anyone using it was expected to have the issues my parents saw. Comcast wasn't notifying customers of the mandatory upgrade until they complained and a tech had an unreserved modem in his truck. Additionally, techs were told not to tell this to existing customers because they had some shortage issue with the modems (and didn't want to pay to upgrade everyone). This allowed them to stagger our the replacements at their leisure, doubly so because many customers really didn't notice.
A couple days later my parents bought the same model modem and stopped renting from Comcast. They occasionally need to pay attention to upgrade, but they've not had a problem since. They were happy to pay to rent the modem until Comcast stopped providing its end of the bargain. I agree with their choice.
