We are in Kyoto at the moment and were at dinner night before last. This older dude at dinner with his wife and daughter starts talking to us and after a while my gf remarks on his good english.
His daughter cracks up and goes, well of course, he's a professor of english in tokyo.
He then invited us to dinner at his house when we go there in a couple of weeks!

I simply don't understand why I must spend money on people I don't know, in a country I'm unfamiliar with, when my funds are limited. It has nothing to do with being ungrateful. If I weren't grateful, I wouldn't have suggested saying, "Thank you for having us over for dinner." That, to me, should cover it. I've acknowledged their generosity and shown that I'm grateful for it in a single sentence and I've made sure that if any emergencies occur, I still have enough money to make sure I remain alive.
