We are in Kyoto at the moment and were at dinner night before last. This older dude at dinner with his wife and daughter starts talking to us and after a while my gf remarks on his good english.
His daughter cracks up and goes, well of course, he's a professor of english in tokyo.
He then invited us to dinner at his house when we go there in a couple of weeks!

Do you thank them?
If you do, then you understand the principle of reciprocity, (or are just acting by reflex through observation of people with manners).
Bringing a gift of some kind is an act of reciprocity, at an attempt to even out the cost/effort of providing you with dinner.
If you can show up and eat their food without feeling some kind of gratitude, you are full of shit. If you don't feel anything, then you are a fucking psychopath. Either way, you are another person that's getting added to my filtered users list.
