How to fly the helicopters, in reply...

4 axes of movement requires 2 hands, no question. This puts your options down to:
* Old school, baby: WASD and arrow keys
* Mouse + keyboard (WASD or arrow keys, whatever you prefer)
* Gamepad
* Joystick
We'd all love a joystick I'm sure, but most of us are stuck with the others, so I'll focus on them. I used to prefer Mouse + Keyboard until I figured out a fantastic gamepad setup last night, which I will share below. Gamepad is MUCH MUCH better than keyboard or mouse for flying the helos.
Generally, I prefer to bind SPEED (up/down) and YAW (left/right) to my left hand, and PITCH (up/down) and ROLL (left/right) to my right hand. PITCH and YAW are much more touchy controls, so I group them together, that way I know to be paranoid when using the right hand! Some other controls that you want to have convenient: Primary fire (duh); Enter/Exit Vehicle (for bailing out; this is on the 'on foot' tab); Issue order (spots targets; also on the 'on foot' tab); change camera (third person view, good for avoiding cranes and the like: also on the 'on foot' tab); and Snap View (this looks behind you in the chopper).
If you try to set this up on the 360 gamepad you will run into a problem: you're going to want to bind your movement controls to the two sticks, but for some reason you can't bind the right stick in game. For this I used XPadder: http://www.xpadder.com/ (thanks OhNoes). This handy little program binds keypresses directly to the XBox (and other) controllers. It costs $10, but that's all you'll ever need to pay for it -- any updates are included. And who hasn't had problem getting the XBox controller working in some older games?
XPadder is pretty simple to setup, so I won't go into the details. Go into BC2, write down your keyboard settings for the controls you want to put in XPadder, and (THIS IS IMPORTANT) clear the in-game gamepad controls or they will conflict. After a couple hours of playing in the chopper last night I figured out this setup, which I quite like: http://www.shackpics.com/files/controls_o18d11dsaxlgaou5qvcr.png
Finally, basic maneuvers is next.
