Tried a new Recon build last night. It was:
The faster-firing sniper rifle (the non-bolt-action one)
4x scope
Your choice of mortar or C4 depending on needs/attack or defense.
It was great! The simple change to the 4x scope turned the recon into a middle-range killing machine. Good for, say, defending the first Alpha point by sitting at ground level and hammering away at any that come down the left tree-lined alley. If a bunch came down they got mortared and I sniped them while they ran for their lives.
Every time I think I am sick of the beta, I discover a build like this and it is fun as hell again. I am going to be so addicted to the final game, I can just see it...

Disclaimer: I'm not saying turn the game in to Modern Warfare, but the fact is they did a lot of things right.
First and most important - the default level 1 builds need perks. One complaint a lot of people who never played CoD4 would lob at it was "yeah but the newbies get smoked" Well, if they sucked sure, but the level one builds had some of the best weapons in the game (like the sniper rifle) and they all came with perks - so it was an even playing field from that respect. When playing BC2, if a guy has a better gun then that's fine, but if he has a better gun and a better scope... that sort of thing gets very discouraging very quickly. The level 1 players need to feel like they have a fighting chance. It's foolish to design the game any other way.
My other major complaint is that it takes entirely too long to level up at the beginning. If they have a roadmap on how long it should take to max out, that's fine, slow down some of the later levels, but I played 3 or 4 map rotations before I leveled up (partially because my team was getting creamed and the teams were unbalanced and we were completely disorganized, but that's how it goes on a pub sometimes) When I first played CoD4-6, I'd get 1-2 levels on the first map. That's very encouraging for new players, so that even if they're getting whipped, at least they can see light at the end.
Also a crouch toggle would be nice. And a Zoom toggle. And being able to strafe while sprinting is a must. And lots of other little complaints but those are the big ones.
