All that was great, but in some ways, after seeing Brink, it was just a little bit of a letdown. I'm not saying Rage doesn't look awesome and of course I'll buy it day one, but I have to say Splash Damage hit it out of the park with Brink. I didn't know anything about it going into it so here's the once sentence description. ET:QW style gameplay meets CoD4's persistent upgrade system using id Tech 5 with insanely good looking environments and the best looking character designs I've ever seen in a game. The characters were very stylized, bordering on cartoony but not quite... imagine Pixar or TF2 characters with a realistic normal map and gritty textures. I think they really popped, I loved the way they looked. And they have this context sensitive movement button, which sounds cheezy but it looked like it really worked. It allowed basically for very seamless first person Parkour. Look slightly up and hit the button, and you'll vault over things, looks sightly down and hit it and you'll slide. It looked great during the demo. The guy ran into some crossfire and slid into cover (there's no cover system but it let him move fast and smoothly) then he vaulted over a wall and started shooting up the other team from behind. I can't overstate how good the game looks though. The opening screen/menu I thought was a painting, it was a guy with his back to the camera looking out over a pier to a white tower in the distance, but then I saw that aliased crawl on his shoulder as he was cycling his breathing animation, and I realized it was live in game. Same thing when he loaded a level, it looked like a painted placeholder but then he started running through it.
Brink really went from my "WTF is this" bucket to the top of my list, right under Diablo 3 and CoD6. Keep in mind that I'm biased as I've played a shit-ton of CoD4, but the objective based goals and the persistent unlocks really stimulate my happy zones. Oh, and offline play and unlocks carry over online, and there's offline LAN play (at least right now) so you can play it at lan parties.
