The linking is done by the user, and is just as valid a piece of information as the text they enter, and the name they post it on. You have to look at it wholistically.
The fact that flat maps preceded globes does not not serve testament to the fact that the earth is really flat, as your logic would have it. Rather, it serves testament to the fact that we as a species did not fully comprehend the complexity of the data in our attempt to form an expression of it.
Threaded mode is more complex than flat mode (your opinion), but does not add any information that is not already there (a truth). Since threaded mode does not add any information, it is either expressing at least what is present in the databases, or less.
You're stripping out information, which makes it easier for you to process what's there. Don't pat yourself on the back for this... you're dealing with a simpler model, which doesn't mean your brain is more complex... it more implies that since you prefer working on a simpler level, you're... simpler.
I am talking about the representation of truth. Because you prefer to see a cube as a flat drawing on a piece of paper, does not mean the cube is flat, nor does it mean you're superior in any way... rather it means that you're stuck to an easier to digest and more familiar paradigm.
People traditionally prefer to work with lower order models, because they are unable to work with higher order models.
And so on.
But go ahead, keep believing the world is flat, and that you know the mind of God! You're just looking at a simpler shadow of the data, stripping out interesting pieces of information which aids you in processing it.
