Flat mode destroys the relationships inherent in the data.
When someone replies to an article, their posting contains various bits of information. One is their name. One is their content. And another is the fact that they have replied to another article.
Flat mode loses this information. It "forgets" that this posting has antecedents. As such, the structure of the data has been stripped... threaded mode does not force data to have a structure. The structure is already there, stored in the database.
Rather, flat mode is indeed taking the sugarcube of linked articles, and FILTERS them down into components. Just like the sieve, a common filter.
I have yet to run things through a filter in real life and have more complex expressions come out. So, yes, a filter is what you describe, in that it separates things. But you display a lack of understanding of what is being filtered.
The filtering is done in flat mode. An article in flat mode has lost information, this information being filtered out. Threaded mode presents the information that the creator of the article put into it. Hence, threaded mode is the true representation.
If there was no "reply" feature which automatically linked articles, then you'd be correct. As such, there is no false addition of information through software trying to splice related information together.
