What does a typical Programming 101 class cover? What language would you start with today?

You definitely want to move to C++ as soon as you get a good handle on memory management and the general layout of functional programming. That gives you exposure to object-oriented programming, which is the model that practically the entire software industry abides by these days. Straight C programming just isn't useful these days beyond a learning level.
C and C++ aren't the *easiest* languages, so you should probably expect to be frustrated at times and also expect to just work through it. But once you have a firm grasp of C++ you'll be prepared to handle pretty much any modern language. That's my opinion anyway.
