StarCraft Dev Moves On To Another Project Inside Blizzard

Lead game play designer David Kim wants to 'branch out' a bit.

With the StarCraft series now in a bit of a lull - not counting the remastering of the original game - lead game play designer David Kim has decided to move on to a new project. The good news is that he will be staying within Blizzard's hallowed halls. The bad news is the project is still unannounced.

"I’ve reached a point in my career where I’ve decided to branch out to a different project, to explore, learn, and grow as a game designer," Kim said in a post to the community on the official forums. "This other project will be right here at Blizzard, so I hope working on this next game will be as awesome as my experience working on SC2 and with the community. The rest of the SC2 balance team will continue to make updates, and communication with the community will not be interrupted."

Kim didn't go into any details on the new project, but considering that Dustin Browder, former game director of Heroes of the Storm and StarCraft 2, also left his post in December for presumably the same unannounced project within Blizzard, one has to wonder what new magic Blizzard has up its sleeve. The company has expanded its portfolio outside its previous tentpole franchises of WarCraft, Diablo and StarCraft with Hearthstone in 2014, Heroes of the Storm in 2015, and Overwatch last year. Diablo 3 in 2012 was the last new progression to an existing franchise, not counting expansion or the oddity of the StarCraft 2 "trilogy."

After the success of Overwatch, Blizzard could be looking to move into another new IP, perhaps an RTS given that both Kim and Browder have expertise there. One can't really argue with Blizzard's Midas touch when it comes to games, aside from the occasional misstep with a World of Warcraft expansion and the Diablo 3 auction house. Whatever it is, the Blizzard faithful likely will gladly open their wallets to support the new endeavor.

While I played them all, I felt that everything between Lich King and Legion were lacking. The others weren't terrible, but Legion shows just how off they were.

No way, that well is dry. Too much time has passed, I think the Necro is just one last fan service cash in. I imagine either D4 or some other Diablo franchise game is in development though.

Shit, a lot of WoW players would probably sub to both.

It could be interesting...but who has time for MMOs anymore. :(

I dunno man, all of their games are pretty exemplary in their respective genres. Sounds like you'll just need to wait for another new franchise or spin-off.

I wish they would do original mobile games. Just one team, give them creative freedom and see what they come up with.
