It appears the dream of having a wireless VR solution will soon be a reality as HTC has announced it will offer a tetherless VR upgrade kit for SteamVR devices in Q1 2017.

A preview version of the upgrade kit was shown off during the Alibaba 11.11 Global Shopping Festival in Shenzhen, China, which UploadVR was able to secure footage of China Regional President of Vive at HTC, Alvin W. Graylin, offering a demo of it in action.

As you can see from the footage below, the HTC Vive is able to deliver a truly wireless VR experience as it’s completely free from any sort of physical tethering to the PC.

The upgrade kit will be available for pre-order on Vive’s Chinese website for 1,499 RMB ($220), although it’ll be available in limited quantity. Pre-orders will go live today at 7am PT, and while anyone can order the kit, HTC will prioritize orders to existing customers who can provide a valid Vive serial number.

Funny, I don't see the situation that way at all.

That's not what I said. I do question how much of a head start they had if what some of the valve devs have said about their internal experiments is entirely accurate.

That said, this is actually a third party product that HTC is offering, it's not something Valve delivered.

If I were going to say something about Oculus, I guess it'd be that I like their controllers a lot more than the Vive ones, and that I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll get to functional inside-out tracking first.

Eh they are doing great things on the software side with their ASW which helps lower the requirement for VR. Touch is almost here as well, which will be great despite the clunky room scale/360deg support.

To be fair, when the FB overlords took over and started forcing additional monetization and social network hooks into the platform, that's going to slow down development (sarcasm, folks)

15ms of added latency is no bueno.
