Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has implied that the next Legend of Zelda game may include multiplayer in some way. The series has dabbled in multiplayer with the Four Swords games, but the recent comments seem to indicate this would be the case for the next main entry in the franchise, which was shown at E3.

"The two-player functionality of Hyrule Warriors is actually something that has traditionally been done in the Dynasty Warriors series, but they’ve changed because of the hardware and the second screen on your GamePad," Aonuma told Game Informer. "Instead of having a splitscreen on the television, you have one-player playing on the television and one on the GamePad. When I was talking back about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience? That’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year."

Aonuma has been focusing on breaking the similarities between Zelda games, with moves like the item rental shop in A Link Between Worlds. At the E3 reveal of the Wii U Zelda game, he commented that he is focusing on making this a more open world to encourage exploration.

Because if there is one thing Nintendo knows, it's how to use online features!!!

Guys. Stop and think. Any multiplayer in a Zelda game would be purely supplementary. Nintendo wouldn't muck with the formula by adding a multiplayer component as extreme as Resident Evil 5-6's drop-in/drop-out co-op, for example. Wii U doesn't even have the online infrastructure to support a mode like that.

These reactions are so extreme. The game won't even be released for a minimum of 12 months, likely 18. Reeeelax.

If they give us more of that Sword/Arrow game from Nintendoland and walk the players through some of the new environments, I'll be really happy.

I'm hoping for an optional Dark Souls invade feature in which you fight 'Dark Link' with a marginal reward/penalty.

I can't believe how badly they screwed up the gamepad for MarioKart 8. Main reason I bought a WiiU and they did such a lackluster job utilizing the gamepad.

How else would it be used? You can motion steer, play with normal controls, use the map, play offscreen.

If you play multiplayer, the gamepad's screen is splitscreen, how is that EVER useful.

Should support 5 players like the Sonic Racing game (4 on tv one on gamepad).

If I'm playing any multiplayer I should be able to set it up where the gamepad doesn't take up any of the slots of the tv. (thus if i'm playing 2 player, the player on the TV gets the whole screen)

They can't keep the frame rate they want to support that. If it means 4 players max to look as good as it does, I'm ok with that.

I feel like I'm missing something. You are saying they limited the game to 4 players because of things that only affect you when playing 2 players?

They couldn't keep the framerate at 60 with two players if they did that and they couldn't keep the framerate at 30 with 5 players. I should have explained further I guess.

If it could have been done, you honestly think they would just ignore it? The framerate in Sonic sucks compared to MK8 for this exact reason.

I believe in his post he was saying that one player would see the entire game on their pad, while the second player gets the TV. No split screen. This should have been entirely possible.

Well, you'd have to show twice as much of the game world if you did it that way, versus split-screen. So it's probably an issue of maintaining 60fps.

That would also be unfair. The player with the pad would also be able to see the TV and get both perspectives while the TV player would never see more than his perspective. It's not a good idea.

It's useful for spotting your opponent. They can see where you are and what you have.

It should stay symmetrical in MP, you should be able to see what your opponents see. 2-player mode should always stay split-screen. Your suggestion would be especially dumb for Battle Mode because the one with the Gamepad could also see the TV.

Seeing the map and removing the HUD clutter off the TV is the only thing I've really expected from the Gamepad. It is unfair though that only the one with the Gamepad can see the map, is there a map toggle for the others?

Anyway, Mario Kart is the wrong game to demand what you are demanding.

No map toggle. I don't play battle does anyone? I've heard its especially bad in this game. I feel like the increase in real estate for everyone more than makes up being able to see what your opponent has.

Yeah, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially after the positive reaction to the 3DS game.

And honestly, a lot of people want changes to Zelda, but they won't say how they want it to change. Aonuma's actually batted around a few ideas and is pursuing them.
