Mortal Kombat X announced, first trailer shown

Mortal Kombat X was officially announced this morning, with a trailer that shows a fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Update: Warner Bros has now officially announced the platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

After plenty of teasing, Mortal Kombat X has officially been officially announced. NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon gave the name this morning, followed promptly by the first trailer. Also, be sure to check out what we think the new Mortal Kombat game should include.

The trailer shows off one of the most classic MK match-ups possible: Sub-Zero vs Scorpion. We see both fighters brawling despite broken limbs, use of environmental weapons, and a particularly nasty-looking fatality. It's slated for release in 2015. Check out the trailer below.

In-engine or in-game? The use of cinematic camera in-game can make it look incredible since a better story can be told.

I swear it's like Ed Boon uses Scorpion as a surrogate for himself and Sub-Zero as a surrogate for John Tobias. I get that Scorpion is his favorite, but it's always Sub-Zero getting his ass beat.

Well the reason Scorpion and Sub-Zero always fight is because Sub-Zero killed Scorpion and his family so he's out for revenge or something.

yeah probably. i always got the impression that all the fire based stuff came from his time in hell, but who is to say that is so? plenty of other characters can utilize elemental forces.

thats just for arguments sake though because i agree that his fire based powers probably come from some sort of embodiment of his rage/hatred and the influlence of being a spirit in hell for years.

I never liked that they made Sub-Zero and Scorpion demons or some shit with glowing eyes and zombie skin, instead of being human. It makes them less personable and not as cool as they are being human ninjas.

Mortal Kombat 2 > all other Mortal Kombats.

Yeah, story wise, but he only featured white eyes. His skin was still human until he did a fatality. Sub-Zero looked like a normal human ninja.

scorpion is a revenant. he was human before he died, but the fact that he is, you know, operating in the mortal realm is because he was able to leave hell to get revenge. the glowing eyes work just fine i think, because he is most certainly not just a human ninja.

It looks sweet as hell. I bought Injustice on the 360 and again on the PS4, and I played a ton of MK9 on my Vita. I went like a decade with no MK playing and now they are back and making the most fun fighting games again.

I was on a field trip for a drafting and CAD class I took in high school where we were at a conference out of town staying at a hotel. The first day we were there, they rolled a Mortal Kombat machine into the arcade there. None of us had ever played it, and I wound up spending every second I could sneak away pumping all my food and expense money into this thing a quarter a time. fuck lunch, get me a bag of combos and a Diet Coke from the machine (maybe a dollar back then) and just jamming quarters into it. I got busted the last night we were there for sneaking out past curfew to play some more.

Cool they both own, you know what is crazy apparently they are going to show Injustice 2 @ E3 and the word is it has been massively upgraded like MKX, man can you freaking imagine that.

Dude that is such an awesome story I bet you love thinking back at those days. Man MK1 was a massive turning point for me as well the game was just so awesome I alsol spent so much cutting grass money on it when ever I could I will never forget the first time I saw both MK1 and especially MK2 in the arcades my body was not ready I practically froze and just said holy shit my mind was blown.

Damn you sure where living the dream back then that sounds like a vacation :) cool story man \m/

eonix MK is my favorite fighter of all time(MK1, 2, 3, U3 and MK9 to be precise) I really think that video was amazing it is really what I want a new MK game to look and play like. I am MEGA juiced up for MKX.

The only negative thing I can say is where is the blood when they are hitting each other and I want it spraying on the environment and staining the ground etc. Other than that it is perfect to me. But most MK trailers do this and they don't show the blood, so I am not worried.

              - the level of detail
              - you interact with the environment
              - weapons are back
              - Xray real time and color
              - new cinematic camera system
              - Mega detailed environments
              - Use environment as weapons as items to power up your attacks
              - mega realistic graphics
              - Mega detailed models
              - massive particles
              - Everything blends and is a = high quality not just say the chars
              - Super moves look way more detailed
              - way more animation and detailed
              - No fighter to date is at this level of detail
              - Lighting is insane
              - texture quality is insane
              - dam,age quality is very detailed
              - new fatality looks amazing
              - the new freeze looks amazing
              - new harpoons look like snakes very fluid
              - The ice and fire from the chars that effect the backgrounds is a epic idea

Any ways not point going on I love MK and if this is really how it will be I am going to be very happy.

What you think it sucks? There is no fighter to date that is at this level of detail if it is real it be the first.

Dude for someone who's job is in the game industry and doing what you do you must then really hate your job since I am sure the majority of games you work on are sequels. Maybe that is why you said you are jaded :(

I don't get how you can say "Same old shit" after watching that trailer. Does that mean you this Dark Souls 2 is crap or Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3d world, Forza 5, DOTA 2, Diablo 3, SF4 etc etc etc I could name a hundreds of games that people think are incredible and are all refreshes of the game before it with subtle updates and a new paint coat.

Odd I remember you said Assassin's Creed Unity that you are working on will blow our minds your telling me that game has bran new gameplay never before seen and it doesn't play anything like all the Assassin's Creed games before it and is the next best thing? I doubt that I bet it plays just like all the Assassin's Creed games but better just like every other game sequel in general. So in that case I better not even bother with it "Same old shit" right.

Man I don't get it? how could that video not impress you, I am sorry that MKX video kills the ACU video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQng7EkJHOI no question.

Anyways different opinions I guess, but still what would you do to the next MK that is not like that video and it would be extraordinary in your opinion I really like to know what that would be or look like?

The only real reason why I didn't pick up the last two MK engine based titles (9 and the DC title) were the excessive use of juggling. It wasn't that you could juggle forever (bad), it was that juggle was the main method to really keep combos going. Even *with* scaling, you needed juggle to keep up the highest levels of damage.

This is a fighter with one AI char, one area that is mostly static that maybe is bit over 5760 in width, a few triggers for environmental effects/animation triggers etc, etc etc this is not a massive open world game with tones of AI, objects etc etc it is a big difference the two games not even in the same league of complexity and demands on the CPU and GPU.

I know what you mean though Far Cry 3 and WD looked totally different when they where completed, while they did not look like shit they where nothing like the original game when shown at E3.

MK9 looks really good if they just ported it to UE4, used the new particles, and effects it look pretty close to this. As for the added detail that is what fighters should be pushing now it doesn't seem unreasonable.

I guess you guys don't doubt the technical and hardware side but more if the companies will not bull shit us and really provide the goods in the end as shown in the orig vids.

What fighters to date have done bull shots or fake vids and they turned out to be shit though? I can not think of any?

Yes, I'm aware of the differences between an open world and fighting game. That wasn't my point. Everyone was up in arms recently over Watch Dogs not looking anything like their E3 2012 demo, so maybe we should show down a bit on the "best trailer ever" nonsense.

Not trying to dampen the excitement for this game, either. I'm super pumped for this as both 9 and Injustice were GREAT. But until I see demonstration that's in game, I'm going to be skeptical.

If I was promised each match was just like this (no UI, camera changes for combos, cinematic special moves), I would pre-order it without hesitation. Either way I'm kinda excited for the next Mortal Kombat. I like the presentation, and I'm hoping they continue to market it this way. Remove the weird meta-parody, and let the violence happen without commentary.
