Today, Microsoft revealed exactly why the Xbox One headset is such a huge improvement over the Xbox 360. According to the company, Xbox One's headset both captures and renders speech at 24 KHz PCM--a threefold increase in rendering rate, and a 50% increase in capture rate.
Microsoft also credits its acquisition of Skype, whose audio codec "enables crystal-clear digital audio." Dedicated audio processing will be offered not only through Skype conversations, but through multiplayer party chats as well.
Of course, numbers are meaningless without something to back them up. So, Major Nelson offered this sound bite for you to compare and contrast:

hmm, interesting that they would wait so long to announce this. since they didn't mention anything at E3...i find it highly suspicious. i bet the headsets are the same old crap and they are releasing this story as a decoy away from their horrible PR.
also the fact that sony hasn't mentioned their headsets yet means they are most likely making them awesome...probably way better than these. -

this is good but it doesn't have much to do with the physical mic being supplied. It's just MS increasing the streaming quality for voice chat in software. I used to use the 360 headset plugged into a controller with the MS wireless adapter thing for PC and in ventrilo it sounded great if the server was set on a high quality codec. Of course the speaker in the 360 headset kind of sucks but the mic quality was nearly the same as any other cheap mic.
