We all know Battlefield 4 is a thing. And supposedly a remarkable thing, at that. But finally, we'll get a good hard look at DICE's shooter at the Game Developer's Conference later this month. According to an invite sent by EA, the reveal will happen on March 26th. Assuming there's no embargoes, you'll see if DICE was able to add any new innovation to the modern war-fighting genre.

Speaking of Warfighting, you did save that copy of Medal of Honor: Warfighter, right? That way, you'll be able to get into the Battlefield 4 beta whenever it drops. We'll have more info after March 26th.

the squad would be individual players but one person on the other team playing it like an RTS.

someone needs to mod something to work like this. I bet it'd be pretty easy to do with natural selection.

It'd be similar to Dungeonland. 3 players doing the ARPG thing, and 1 doing RTS.

I could see a Left 4 Dead mod that does that. Replace the AI Director with, well "Human Director".

same, I'd really like to see a return to WW2 with the new engine. I think the setting just lends itself to fun, well-balanced gameplay (as weird of a sentance as that is).

Doesn't anyone think this is kind of a bad thing? I'd hate to start seeing GDC taken over by big blockbuster announcements and move from a developer conference to a mass media show.

It's stupid and the GDC has actively tried to combat this shit for the last few years now. But this is EA, so what did you expect?

This is DICE, if they don't show actual game footage it'll be engine showcases or at least thats what I'm hoping for anyway.

Hmmm, I wonder if they've really been fighting it. The GDC is a business too, and their goal was probably to get here eventually, where they have big companies like EA paying them money to present.

I am sure BF4 will nice looking graphically but I am not sure about the gameplay anymore with this series. They basically removed lot of what was unique or good with battlefield series. They basically started compressing the maps to make them more infantry/call of duty friendly and less about the vehicles. The maps that do support vehicles don't feel balanced at all for them.

The maps that came with BF3 were shit but a lot of the expansion maps are cool.

The only maps that felt decent were Caspian and Firestorm and possibly Kharg. Even then they were far too small compared to BF2 and BF2142 as you couldn't do any advanced tactics. BF was never about about the instant action/spawn until Bad Company introduced that and now every game suffers from the problems it causes. The flags are less important and the squad leader has no real function.

The game suffers at least from the long time BF player perspective from being designed for lower populations and different philosophies compared to the other battlefield games.

Yep. I remember playing things like Tobruk where the Germans did a tank assault against emplaced infantry and artillery. Fun. Or Gazala where the narrow pathing hurt vehicles but made playing "commando" fun (made even more fun in Desert Combat flying the A-10 through the valleys). Wide variety of game play. The stock BF3 maps were essentially all the same, being infantry only maps with useless jets and a couple of vehicles that didn't help too much.

It makes me sad to admit it but BF3 really didn't do much for me after a month or so, and I thoroughly hated the unlock system. I loved me some BC2 though, and would buy a new one of those in a heartbeat.

BC2 wasn't awful - the SP campaign was surprisingly well-written and enjoyable - but the lack of basic standard movement features like Prone was idiotic. As long as the game is customized properly to each platform it's released for, I'm cool with it. It's a great series if they don't consolize it. :)

I fear a ridiculous multiplayer XP grind sprinkled in completely-optional-yet-highly-attractive micro-transactions along the way to help soothe the burn. I hope that's not the case.

Don't get your hopes up. I'm sure there will also be bi-weekly paid DLC that has to be purchased if you want any chance of finding a populated server. EA will kindly maintain a single, 8 player server for people with only the base game.

Wtf? No one even things of the SimCity launch fiasco? Why are people excited? It's probably going to be always-on single player, and have a shitload of bugs.

And it'll probably have great looking trailers and posters, and sucker fanboys in anyway. Sigh.

Save yourself $35 and pick up Natural Selection 2 (www.naturalselection2.com) for $25. Who needs vehicles when you can be a giant alien impaling marines on your horn?

And before you say BF4 is a multiplayer game first, I bet you they will screw with that too. I predict the last 10 days of August to be another messy affair for EA, even though I know nothing at all about BF4. Will the fanboys learn? Probably not.

MUST HAVE IN GAME SQUAD VOIP SIMILAR TO BF2!

Pretty sad when the voip of a 8 year old game surpasses the current release BF3 but damn it needs to come back. Squad voip, and especially squad leader to commander voip, was CRITICAL to gameplay.

Yeah it's hilarious I don't really want ANY new features in BF4 over BF3 except a better squad experience including out of the box VOIP and squad leader to squad leader communication. Even if they don't add commander back (I highly doubt they will), some way for squads to work together in a larger context is something really valuable for the BF franchise.
