Valve confirms Source 2, Ricochet 2 in development

Valve boss Gabe Newell has confirmed the company is working on a new Source engine, along with a sequel to Ricochet.

Valve has been tight-lipped about the possibility of a new Source engine, never explicitly denying one but implying last year that it prefers to simply update its old engine. Apparently all it took to spill the beans was a nice party, because company president Gabe Newell let out some juicy tidbits when fans paid him a birthday visit.

The group of fans from 4chan.org's /v/ board paid a visit to Valve and posted a video of the event on YouTube (via Joystiq). Newell took some questions, and one fan asked if Valve is working on a new Source engine. His reply is muddied by some audio problems, but the answer seems clear enough.

"We've been working on new engine stuff for a while," Newell said. "We've just been waiting for a game to roll it out with." Just to make sure the response had no room for doubt, a follow-up asked if it's an entirely new engine rather than just an extension to Source, and Newell confirmed with a simple "yeah." He also mentioned a sequel to Ricochet.

In August, fans discovered what seemed to be Source 2 files hidden in the Source Filmmaker. These included references to the current engine as distinguished between "Source 2," along with Source 2 tool icons.

At this point, I don't even care anymore... They've turned Half Life into Duke Nukem. By the time they release episode 3 or HL3, they will be irrelevant.

No, they haven't. They haven't pimped it. They haven't said boo about it. They've done the literal opposite of DNF, save for the time between Ep2 and the next game.

Nobody was waiting for HL2 because no one knew it was in development.

I guess strictly speaking no one knows HL3 is in development either.

er, hl2 was delayed like a year, beta leaked too, it was pretty obviously in development

They're waiting for the PS4 or next Xbox to drop. There's no way they'll release a next-gen game for PC first. They would have done it already - after all, PC's are more than a few generations beyond the consoles.

I wonder if it is at least partly based on Source rather than a ground up approach.

My guess is they are planning to release Source2 engine when they release HL3. Like they did with HL2. As for when though, who knows...

If so, we should see it at E3, a full ten years since they revealed HL2.

          I can't believe it's been that long... :(

i suspect a reason we haven't seen anything yet is because they aren't allowed to show off the next gen hardware it runs on yet.

I doubt they would hold back the engine because of consoles. They certainly didn't do it for first iteration of the source engine. It is more likely that Valve is taking there time to develop the new game. Just remember that HL2 came 6 years after the HL1 and 8 years for TF2. The episodes were technically supposed to be the equivalent of HL3 but the episodic format didn't work for them.

A Tron-like multiplayer mod for Halflife 1 that Valve released a long time ago. Never really was that popular, hence the joke.

That looks really cool...looks way more interesting that CS (then again I pretty much hate CS and felt that it was a distraction from better games like Quake...so there's that).

It is a tron like game. In most of the interviews Newell I have seen he uses it as a code word for Half-life 3. Its one way of saying they are working on the game without committing to announcing it early. Then again they could really be working on a sequel for it.

It would be amazing if they were doing a new Orange box pack of some sort and Ricochet 2 was part of that...like Ricochet 2...something new and crazy (ala Portal)...and HL2: Ep.3.

Is Valve allergic to making games with a 3 in the title?
