Prey 2 not canceled, but 'in limbo'

Prey 2 designer has said that the game isn't officially canceled, but is still "in limbo" six months after Bethesda announced its indefinite delay.

We've heard plenty of speculation about the fate of Prey 2, since a series of unfortunate circumstances befell the project. Today we've gotten a new piece of official word from Human Head, and it's what you might call less than encouraging. According to designer Nathan Cheever, the game "hasn't been officially canceled, only in limbo."

Cheever tweeted the update (via IGN). He later called this revelation "nothing new," since we already knew Bethesda indefinitely delayed the game due to "quality reasons."

Regardless, Cheever's tweet confirms a lack of forward progress since Bethesda gave that word way back on April 19, meaning it's spent almost six months in limbo. The emphasis on it not being officially canceled doesn't sound very positive either.

After the word of the delay hit, a source told Shacknews that Human Head had stopped working on the game in November of last year, as part of a contract dispute. Shortly after, the developer started gauging interest in a Rune sequel, and losing senior staff at a pretty dramatic pace. This may not be an official cancellation, but it's another sign that points toward that eventuality.

You know, I wonder whether it wouldn't be better to be able to create an official Shacknews article parent for the posts that inevitably scoop these news items. Those threads are often more active than the news article. I know some people are going to be butthurt about losing the OP status, but they'll still get first post, or perhaps find a way to give them a direct credit in the main post.

      No big surprise.

That f*cking sucks. After the entire internet was drooling over this game at E3, why in the heck would you let yourself lose that much momentum in this market? It just makes no sense.

No it doesn't but these are people making business decisions. People aren't always rational and oftentimes have conflicting priorities.

Or there just aren't resources to dedicate to it. Just because something may be popular doesn't mean you can actually do it.

You should probably be interested in whatever CD Projekt is doing with Cyberpunk IP. I know I am.

Prey 2 being in limbo seems oddly appropriate.

      It could be 2 things.

      1) the game we saw demonstrated was really just scripted stuff that wasn't indicative of what they actually had. And after a lot of time and money they weren't doing a good job of getting closer to that "concept"

      2) They're going to retarget the game for next gen.

I am going to go with 2) on this one.

My guess is they miscalculated the release of "next-gen" consoles. I would not be shocked at all if this is one of the first multi-platform games to be released with the next iteration of consoles.
