It may not be the most well-liked Resident Evil game ever, but it certainly will be one of the most plentiful. Capcom has shipped 4.5 million copies of Resident Evil 6 to retailers, backed by a "strong worldwide response" from fans. In fact, this initial shipment is the "highest ever" for a Capcom game, proving that Metacritic scores ultimately don't matter when franchises get big enough.

The Resident Evil franchise has now sold over 50 million units since the original game released in 1996, according to Capcom. They claim that "Resident Evil is just as popular today as it was 15 years ago." Guess making all those "mass-market" adjustments helped their bottom line.

"shipped" is such a worthless metric.

Considering their huge investment in the game and since I like Capcom, hopefully it does okay in terms of sales. I will pick it up at some point because I love this series, but the initial impressions/reviews have turned me off of a first day sale.

Aw, I was hoping this was gonna be a bust so maaybe Capcom would go back to giving us Survival Horror RE games and not these lame-o Action RE games.

Let's see how it does in the used market the next few weeks. I'm anticipating a significant portion of people who preordered it, played it, and sold it back to GameStop in disgust.

Well indeed, but ultimately, would Capcom care about that? I mean, they got first-sale proceeds at retail...if GameStop's stuck with a shit-ton of used copies that no one wants...would anyone but Gamestop be concerned?

This gets me thinking...is there any retailer influence on the publishers (and in turn on the developers) to improve sales of games/franchises that don't sell to expectations?

afaik the retailers and publishers distribution agreements don't just leave the retailer shafted if the game doesn't sell once it's on the shelf. Plus the retailer controls how many copies they want. It's not like they're blind, if RE6 sells worse and/or reviews worse than RE5 then you can assume that will factor into negotiating distribution for RE7

Rev, they shipped 4.5 million copies. They didn't sell 4.5 million copies. It could still bomb.

Isn't that 4.5 mil the same as sold as far as Capcom is concerned? So assuming nobody buys any of them at the store, Capcom still got paid for 4.5 mil copies? Correct?

Stores don't buy games and resell them.

At least in the home video market, stores can ship back. It would probably be similar for video games. Again, for the HVM, stores don't buy at a wholesale price, but take a % of whatever is sold on a per copy basis, based on whatever price they sell it at, sale price included.

Stores can return units they don't sell to publishers.

I like Capcom and I like them even more after Dragon's Dogma... but in a way I hope they truly fail miserably on this game so they can realize how WRONG they are about turning an excellent franchise into horrible Gears of War clone. A lot of Japanese developers seem to be horribly wrong in their assumptions in what Western audiences want to see. Dragon's Dogma, on the other hand, was kind of a labor of love and a bit of a risk... but you can feel the passion of the developer in that game. It's the best game they've put out in a while in my opinion. Capcom... if you are listening, you need to grow your ball sack back when it comes to Resident Evil and let the developers make a game THEY think is great and THEY want to work on instead of working so hard to please western audiences. I'm a strong believer in the idea that if you build a great game, they will come (most of the time). But this is ESPECIALLY true with Resident Evil. This series has a huge following who seems to buy the games even when they suck, they have the perfect situation to experiment a bit and take a risk. Go back to the original RE formula again for one game and see how it sells! Put some faith in your fans.
