The games market went to Hell in May. Diablo III topping retail software sales for the month, according to the latest sales figures from NPD, and helped fuel a resurgence in the PC games space. Other top performers included Max Payne 3, which launched the same day as Diablo III, as well as Sniper Elite V2 and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. While action titles continued their dominance of the top 10, 2K Sports' NBA 2K12 held the fifth spot for the second straight week. Blizzard continued to show its impact in the PC market with Diablo III at number 1, the first time since July 2010 that a PC-only title has accomplished that feat. The game that did it in 2010? StarCraft 2, another Blizzard mainstay.

Max Payne 3's bullet time couldn't overcome the Prime Evil

Total video game sales continued to shrink, down 28 percent from last year. However, the PC market jumped 230 percent from the same time last year to $80 million, fueled by Diablo III sales. The overall spend in May, including digital sales and microtransactions was estimated to be $1.17 billion. Here is the full list: Top 10 Games (New Physical Retail only; across all platforms including PC)
  • Diablo III (PC)
  • Max Payne 3 (360, PS3, PC)
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360, PS3)
  • Prototype 2 (360, PS3)
  • NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)
  • Sniper Elite V2 (360, PS3)
  • Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)
  • Dragon's Dogma (360, PS3)
  • Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360, PS3)
Major titles that have dropped off the list from last month include Mass Effect 3, Kinect Star Wars and The Witcher 2.

The game has problems, but as someone who spent $60 on it, I'm happy with my purchase. In fact, those problems wouldn't be a big deal at all if the game didn't have such potential.

I wonder what the net sales are going to be now that the 30 day refund window is closed for Diablo III. I got a refund, and I know all my friends who played at launch also got refunds. RMAH, no PvP, and very few similarities to D2 drove our exodus.

Caught up in hype mostly, apparently just like the rest of my group :P

The game undelivered big time, the post launch patches were obviously motivated solely to maximize RMAH yield, and post-launch support, uptime, and connectivity were horrid.

The net sales will be 98%+ of the gross sales. A small number of disgruntled grognards do not materially affect the revenue of a $500 million game.

And you are nuts for not liking the RMAH. It already existed, Blizzard just legalized & regulated it. It's the same argument for legalizing weed.

I didn't mind the RMAH itself, but how it messed with game design decisions. It's the primary driver behind the always-on DRM, poor Inferno quality drop rates, Inferno difficulty nerfs, and raised repair costs. I suppose it was unreasonable to assume a sequel would be like its predecessor. I've learned my lesson.

You are making an awful lot of assumptions; many of which have been completely denied by Blizzard on multiple occasions.

At the end of the day, Blizzard doesn't make games just so you smile. The fact is they make them as an investment, and maximizing return isn't unreasonable in any such investment. If you love the game, keep playing. Games are entirely subjective and don't construe anything I say to mean you should make the decisions I have. I'm merely discussing why a group of people might be unhappy with a game that obviously commanded a lot of attention. If they make money in the process of you enjoying a RMAH, then you can be secure in knowing more games you'll like have a good chance of coming along.

Did you play the game up through Inferno difficulty?

If the answer is yes, I don't think you should have asked for a refund.

If the answer is no, how can you judge the quality of the Inferno drop rates?

            • reply
              June 15, 2012 11:34 AM

They published the drop rates for Inferno. Lvl 61-63 items (which are superior Inferno quality loot) have a 24%, 16%, 8% drop rate for Lvl 61,62,63 items respectively in Act IV Inferno. You'll mostly be sifting through Hell quality items even at the highest possible level of difficulty.

Those aren't actual drop rates. The actual rates are much lower. Those are back end drivers of the actual drop rates.

Drop rates have always been low in Diablo games. This isn't something that was changed because of the rmah.

End of nightmare then I stopped playing game (couldn't stomach another iteration to grind levels). Two weeks later I heard of the refund program and jumped on it before the window closed. I was disheartened by the absolute need to hit up the AH to find gear vaguely appropriate for my character. I had the unfortunate luck of just finding Barbarian only mighty weapons that had +100 int on them for some reason :P

That's like saying you played WoW for 20-25 hours, tried to return it, and should be condemned. The game was built to last much, much longer and you know it. That's why Blizzard even offered the refund policy for the 30 day window, as they're not required to do so where I live.

                  You should be.

WoW has a $15/month fee attached to it, and a lot of its longevity is built around that. Diablo 3 will be played for 20+ hours and then dropped by the majority of people who purchase it. The longevity is only for a few who like playing these games for long periods of time, which is not the majority of people who purchase it.

No analogies are required here. You played a game for a fairly substantial amount of time, had your fun, decided it was no longer fun, quit, and got a full refund. It's somewhat questionable.

Where do you draw the line? That's a tough question. It varies slightly. I definitely draw it a hell of a lot earlier than beating nightmare.

It was more the hope for fun. When a game is locked based on level progression (skills, difficulty, and exploration) it's not unusual to slog through the beginning areas in hopes that the experience will get better. I lost that hope after Nightmare.

If someone handed me a lvl 60 and put me in Inferno, I can bet you I would have put in a whole lot less play time before I found out it wasn't for me.

You got your value of it. You didn't deserve the money back. In a restaurant if you don't like a plate you send it back. You don't eat 90% of it or all of it then expect not to pay.
