Wasteland 2 Kickstarter ends with $3.04 million

inXile's Kickstarter to fan-fund a sequel to classic post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland has wrapped up, reaching $3,040,574. Hitting the $3 million mark means we can expect mod tools too.

When inXile's crowd-funding drive for a Wasteland 2 hit its goal within two days, it was clear it'd be something big. As the pledging period ended this morning, inXile confirmed that it has scooped $3,040,574 to make a sequel to the classic post-apocalyptic RPG.

The Kickstarter project page only shows $2,933,147, but $107,427 in Paypal pledges pushed it over the top.

The original goal was only $900,000, so what will all this extra money mean for the game? At $1.5 million, Mac and Linux versions were promised. Hitting $2.1m meant inXile could afford to draft Obsidian Entertainment, the studio founded by veterans of Fallout and Planescape: Torment developer Black Isle, to help out. The $2.5m mark brought funding for larger and deeper world. Passing $3 million means that yes, we can expect mod tools too.

Of course, the actual amount of money the studio gets to make the game will be a little smaller, what with Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees and some people's payments undoubtedly not processing. Still, it's a whole heap o' money.

Most of the Kickstarter projects we are covering have high profile industry veterans at the helm of the project: Tim Schafer at Double FIne, Brian Fargo at inXile, Jordan Weisman at Harebrained Schemes, Jane Jensen at Pinkerton Road. A couple others are interesting because of the people involved, the way the campaign was handled or something innovative about the project itself.

So Kickstarter is news, but we try to filter it based on what we think the Shacknews audience wants to read about. Not every story is of interest to every reader.

Yes you are right, everybody throw your money down and lets find out in 12-24 months if this Kickstarter thing is reliable. Studios cant make good games as it is, only 4% of games make a profit, ugh why I am bothering telling you facts, you are probably repackaging failed publisher pitches into kickstarter campaigns as we speak.

Quite a few board and card games have already come out of Kickstarter projects.

The first kickstarter video game is coming out this summer.

Its just.... Ive worked in dev for 10 years and seen so much shit and waste, to think someone will develop a decent game in 12 months with 300k is just... not very realistic. I bet 80% of these projects will either not get finished or just get dumped out there unfinished when they run out of money, kinda like every other game :)

I think of Kickstarter more like an experiment. For a few bucks I can see if this crowd sourced funding thing will work, and if it does, I get a couple of games that pulled from the past into my now :)

I wish I could see it that way - but Arcanum is so unforgivably buggy that I don't know how I ever manged to slug my way through it once.

On a second time through I got so fed up with how unbalanced the turn-based combat is towards gunslingers that I rage-quit and gave up before leaving the first town. Somehow it took me an equal number of Actions to reload a pistol as it took the Orc guarding the bridge to run halfway across the screen and punch me in the face.

Oh - Troika. How your games showed such promise but were so utterly flawed.

I wonder how Valve feels about these Kickstarter projects. All of them have said they'll be releasing on steam yet all the pre-sales are through kickstarter so steam won't get any of that funding but will still need to provide services.

Just noticed that I've been spending more on Kickstarter lately than Steam games :)

I doubt they really care. Valve is on board with stuff like the Humble Indie Bundles and they don't get a cut (I assume) from those either.

With Kickstarter, they get another game on their store that they will profit from. Without Kickstarter, that game doesn't exist. Sounds like they'd be happy!

I think Valve will get their cut once they put the game on Steam. Valve will buy a bulk quantity of keys from inXile, and inXile will probably reimburse an amount for each extra key which someone registers on Steam.

I think it would be more fair to say that Firefall MP is a lot of fun... but that's also a much smaller project (undertaking) and the PvE is very much BETA. There is a lot more that needs to go into place there. They have the bones though for an excellent game. They really just need to refine the experience a bit and add a ton more content.
