Mass Effect 3 is 'brand new beginning' for series, Shepard's last mission
by Jeff Mattas, Aug 29, 2011 1:00pm PDTWith the Mass Effect trilogy about to end, fans will undoubtedly be taken aback by confirmation that ME3 will represent the end of Commander Shepard's adventure. BioWare CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka said that Mass Effect 3 will be Shepard's final mission, "even if there are more games in the Mass Effect universe."
In an interview at Gamescom earlier this year, Muzyka told PC Gamer that BioWare has "ambitious plans to continue [the Mass Effect] franchise going forward." "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we'd provide for Commander Shepard, but it's also a brand new beginning," he said, concluding, "it's an entry point for new fans and it's also a brand new beginning."
Testimony from Dr. Muzyka is enough, but PC Gamer also followed up with Mass Effect producer Michael Gamble, who confirmed the same. "After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete," he stated, before going on to bluntly confirm that Shepard would not appear--presumably as a playable character--in future games made in the Mass Effect universe.
