Arma 3 announced for 2012

The next instalment in Bohemia's battlefield sim series is headed to PC next summer, with "radical engine improvements" promised.

War is serious business, and it's nice to have Bohemia Interactive remind us of that. The Czech developer today announced a new entry in its realism-heavy battlefield simulation series Arma, for release on PC in summer 2012.

Arma 3 will take players to a sunny Mediterranean island, where apparently there's a "well-guarded military secret" to be seized. As well as an "open-ended and story-driven" single-player campaign, Arma 3 will offer co-op and competitive multiplayer modes. There'll also be the ubiquitous mission editor.

"Radical engine improvements" are promised for Arma 3, including PhysX-supported vehicle simulation and a "revamped" animation system. It certainly looks pretty. There's more information over on the official site.

Bohemia is also working on a civilian helicopter sim by the name of Take on Helicopters, which it announced in March. That's due to hit PC in the fourth quarter of this year.

This is a game that could stand some polish. Arma 2 seems great, but fighting the controls and bugs really damped the experience.

I heard some of those dirty Takis were talking about our mothers last night. We should go teach them a lesson.

We need to get back to doing this stuff on a regular basis, Steam just had an OA sale not too long ago, so we could round up the whole squad!

The ShackTac people are about to go crazy, then figure out if they can get an 18-century warfare mod for it.

The last mission was pretty epic, even if it did periodically break.

Interesting, so this means there will be a new VBS3 engine for warfighter training in addition. Version 1.5 (the "final" version) of their current warfighter training engine comes out this month.

I imagine they decided to finalize VBS2 so that they could move on to a "new product" and generate more revenue from that.

Fantastic. No other game offers what arma does and it is a franchise that really makes use of new software technology. My holy trifecta of shooters will be CSS + BF3 + ArmA 3. I am really excited to see physx support in the engine. That should bring awesome enhancements to the game.

Cool, but I'm not buying it until 6 months after release and the price goes down/bugs are mostly fixed.

If the day comes that they no longer have the "Oh. No. Number 3. Is down." or "Enemy. Man. 4 o'clock" I'll... we'll I'll be honest. I'll STILL only buy it 6 months later when all the worst bugs are gone.

Awesome, amazing games. Always aggravating for a few months after release.

Fuck yea i can't wait to see how it looks in motion. Seeing that they have a new animation and physics system makes me very happy. Maybe you'll actually be able to break glass in the game now!

Don't care bout engine improvements unless it involves 'enhanced controls'. Such a good game, but could be such a great game if the controls weren't so janky.

Wow. Some of the landscapes look like concept art. I'd love to see a Stalker game with that draw distance and detail.
