Morning Discussion
Christmas is also a time for telling festive stories and by far the best I've seen so far is The Year Kenny Loggins Ruined Christmas.
If you want video games, though, the 'handmade' Flash adventure game The Dream Machine is absolutely delightful. Lovely atmosphere and writing. Of course, I only saw it thanks to the top chaps at Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

No. At one point you said that every time the server version changes the client becomes incompatible. That's not true. Most of the time that is true.. but not every time. And Nixx gave an example of that today.
I think the key difference between your criticism and Fox's... he states things clearly and level-headed and you come across as a crazy dude leaning his head out the window screaming at the top of his lungs. :) Maybe not always.. but today.. in this thread definitely. -

Well actually, the first patches this morning weren't mandatory for the servers.
I had patch 1.1 and was on morfus' server, which isn't version 1.1: http://notch.tumblr.com/post/2415421531/updated-client-and-server-to-beta-1-1
The server update isn’t mandatory...
Then later, there was a mandatory server update, which means we have to wait for the server admins to update before we can play.

groooan, updated to 1.1_02, mandatory for client and server, fixing the container not opening with empty hands bug -

i hate it when people say you mad bro? OF COURSE WERE FUCKING MAD. He's just shakin his dick around not really doing solid work for the game, and with every update more bugs pop up. It's keeping me from playing the game when I want to play it. He should tighten up, it's been said already I don't need to belabor the point.....but stop the whole 'u mad' shit becuase it's retarded.

no, I'm not going to defend whoever you said that too either. I mean constant whining does suck but I'm just saying I hate the phrase...it's like some internet tough guy response to anyone actually sharing frustrations. God forbid someone wants to mention a frustration that is valid. It's just part of the worst internetisms I think one can make....like some inverse nerd libido slam.
-
lol you're so funny. I have problems with Notch too dude, anyone who's played Minecraft for a few months would (e.g. from yesterday http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24823609 ). My problem was with JohnnyRey's tone, and the fact that every time he blows up in a thread like this he always falls back to "it was sarcasm, lrn 2 internet." Sooner or later Johnny's got to realise that either 1) he lacks sufficient writing skills to adequately express his point without sounding like a crying child, instantly putting everyone on the defensive; or 2) he's actually mad over this stuff, which he should stop before he gives himself an ulcer or something.
The way that I've been dealing with the shitty patch from the last couple of days? I've been playing a number of the excellent games on my backlog. It's been awesome.

Wow, people are actually mad?
We are not entitled to anything, not a single thing. We are not even entitled to a playable game because if we report that the game is unplayable for us. Guess what? We are doing our job as a beta testers.

I'm more worried about how his structure is.
He seems to attempt to fix something, and something which SHOULD be totally unrelated bugs out.
He really should try making the thing more modular,
Open Source some of the functions out to people, (Like Leaf Decay) and let the crowd dissect the shit out of the code for him.

Got some weirdness with portals in my single player game.
I went to the Nether and was messing around, trying to kill things. A ghast shot at me and hit near the portal, and for some reason the portal got deactivated! It's still complete, none of the obsidian blocks got destroyed, so I don't know what happened.
I died, and went back through the portal in the overworld. It put me in the next closest portal in the Nether (I'd built a few for testing).
Maybe here's what happened. The ghast 'temporarily' blew up the obsidian, which caused the portal to go away? -

What do people mean when they say it's a Hamachi server?
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1025&t=113456
I know what Hamachi is (kinda), but not sure how it relates to Minecraft.-
-
I mean... even if you are using your home connection you'd think it would be easier to just foward that port to a server on the inside? Maybe they are just reluctant to give out their public IP to random Internet people? That's actually probably what it comes down to. If that's the case... I really don't blame them.
-
-
I know what Hamachi is... but I'm not sure why you would need it with Minecraft. Generally you use Hamachi to play games which only have LAN support.. over the Internet. It creates a virtual private network across the internet and allows people to play as if they were all in the same building (on the same network). But... minecraft works over the Internet out of the box.. so... I'm at a loss.

Yeah, by moving tools server-side.. they are not tracked by the client anymore. I think the problem before was that the tools 'existed' on the client side in your inventory... and once you dropped them on the ground they went to the server. Somewhere in-between they lost the status of their decay (he probably could have made it so they kept that status.. but he just didn't want to do the work because he knew one day he wanted it to be completely server-side). That might be more information than you wanted.. but that's how I understood it.

hah when I saw the "75 player slots" I thought fuck, that must be on a beefy server, and I was right:
This server is currently hosted on a CentOS 5 x64 bit Dedi with 32GB of DDR3 RAM, a Dual Xeon E5620 Quad Core Processor, and 1GB/s dedicated upload/download speed. I have allocated 16GB (the maximum amount) of heap memory for JVM; and also added multiple modifications/optimizations to the Java on the Dedi to make everything run a little more reliably. In addition, in the highly unlikely event that the serer crashes, it is outfitted with an automated restart that detects when the server crashes, and then restarts it. Good news?
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/2416817644/some-thoughts-about-release-schedule-during-beta
Here’s an idea!
* All commit comments are public to everyone. Possibly even tweeted out
* Everyone who has bought the game can download the latest nightly build. These will almost certainly be quite buggy.
* Before doing a release, we make a special Release Candidate build. You can download these as well, and they’re supposed to be not buggy. (But they will be. ;))
* Once the release candidate works fine, it will be released as the new official version. This will probably be once or twice per month.
Perhaps something like that might work! -
