I love the Trek!
We've opened a Steam group for Star Trek: Online Shackers. If you'd like to join please link your steam profile here, and we'll add you in.
This group is not for a ST:O Guild. You'll have to talk to Clay not really, we have no idea if you want that.-

-
Also, in case somebody didn't see it, there's a sweet Klingon space combat video here:

I'm going to talk out of my ass here, but I -suspect- it'll have something to do with Fleet Engagements. I haven't seen any videos showing gameplay that involves ships needing to position themselves (like you have to do in most 2d MMOs), so I'll be curious to see what kind of tactics can come into play that are above simple large-scale scraps.
Of course, MMOs -never- have their end-games set at launch. Even WoW's launch 'end game' was totally dumb (UBRS, BRD and Stratholm. Remember, WoW launched with no raids).

I would like to remind everyone who is going to play this game that you are paying money support a Star Trek universe where Data is dead. Your money is funding the acceptance and continued support of Rick Berman's stupid decisions with the Star Trek universe. You are saying to them that it's okay that you killed off Data, and here is $50 for the game + $15 per month for doing it.
Shame on you, sirs. Shame on you.-
-
-
When the actor says they aren't going to play the character anymore, they need to kill off the character. Then when the actor says, "just kidding!" they need to bring him back. At least this time with data, they left themselves a decent back hole entrance.
For the record, Brent Spiner has not agreed to reprise the character, but as mentioned above is back in the comics (I am not sure if the movie prequel is considered canon. Probably not, but it was the "Official Movie Tie-in and I view it as essential reading for the movie). -

Not ignoring, just taking place in the "prime" universe. Technically Abrams Trek cause the destruction of Romulus in the original universe (the one with Picard and Co.).

No, at the moment the official site is down: http://www.startrekonline.com/
I'd check when it returns. -
Someone in their forums apparently found the torrent on cryptics website
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=53594
torrent link: http://installers.crypticstudios.com/torrents/Star%20Trek%20ST.0.20100108a.0.torrent
Someone there said that the file is the same that D2D customers can download right now as the official client, so this might be it.

The problem (for me) has really been that most of the games have been completely unrefined not only in gameplay terms but in content (which is expected for launch games) and, most egregiously, in design. Aion had an intense grind, AoC had a grind and a significant lack of content plus a huge number of bugs, Vanguard was badly designed, had a lack of content, was buggy and unfinished, and WAR had content and balance issues.
LoTR: Online is the best of the MMO launches I've seen post-WoW, but their content was not interesting to me (especially since they did not have rights to Peter Jackson's works).

Question for Beta and Steam ID
Do I have to purchase the Digital Deluxe edition to start playing in the Beta tomorrow? The reason I ask is because of this line on the $49.99 version of the game on Steam.
Pre-Purchase Star Trek Online
or pre-purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition and receive bonus content and early beta access!
Oh invite kthx http://steamcommunity.com/id/scotty22-

No, you are still wrong. Devs hate when players use betas as demos. Betas are an unfinished product meant to test their software and servers. They don't want you judging their product off unfinished work.
MMOs often have demos or trial periods after they are released. If you want to try it, wait for that. -

What is there to fall for?
Here's the thing, what people are "falling for" is the illusion that because separately we're all pretty above average skilled gamers, that we'll make some badass uber guild. That's been the silly parts of all those games.
Star Trek just looks fun. Conan had clear, clear problems, and Warhammer was actually pretty good if a bit immature at launch, but both are pretty WoW like. I'm tired of sticking fucking swords in to fucking boars. I'm expecting a bit of pew pew pew starship fun with a few shackers and I don't even care if it's not novel after a month.-
-
-
-
-
also, IAWTGeedeck. Shackers make fun gamefellows. But each time they enter into an adventure like this it's all Fun Time Charlie, no rules needed, just here to have guild chat. Which means by the time 48 hours have passed you end up with 10% of the people are playing serious game, and 50% wanting to know why they are getting left behind. The rest never really log in past the first day.
They you have something like the goons who actually have a plan to do X and Y. And while most of them also end up quitting shortly, before that happens they have accomplished many things which if nothing else are very amusing. -
-
This is what happens whenever Shackers play an MMO:
Bunch of shackers hype up a game.
Someone sets up a group/clan/whatever.
Everyone joins and signs up.
Game launchers.
Shackers are totally disorganized, can't decide on server, can't decide on faction, etc.
Half joins one server, 2nd half joins another.
1 week in, half of that half already quit.
The other half abandons guild and goes their own way.
You feel lonely, you abandon your level 30 character to join the other server.
It's even worse, now you're playing alone.
You quit.-
And what I'm saying is that it's what you make of it.
Plus...
No servers
No factions really... You have to have a Fed to start a Klingon.
Most of your negatives gone right there. If I play this a month and have fun the entire time, I call that an MMO success. It doesn't need to take over my life or anything. And my impression with this game, unlike most others, is that it's not too tough to have fun with less than half a dozen people.
-
-
-
-
-
I blame the games. I was a bit late to the party as far as Conan and the Shack goes but by the time I got there it was about 5 people who were super dedicated to it and building up the guild village.
Unfortunately it was lacking in a lot of areas and the interest couldn't be sustained. Good games will hold a crowd.

Of course, I've just used the torrent. :-)-
-
I'm not sure to be honest. From what I've read on the STO forums, I was under the impression that a beta app had been added to your games list. Something like "Star Trek Online - beta"?
I have to admit that I'd be tempted to just grab the key from Steam, download the torrent and run the game that way. I use Steam so that I don't have to keep my games up-to-date but MMOs often release hotfixes which would require me to update my local files any way. -

My understanding is that everything but the tutorial can be done in groups.
Multiplayer on foot means that the captains replace bridge officers. If there's only two captains then they each contribute some of their bridge officers. I haven't seen any videos of faction PvP on foot but I'm sure it's in the game.
In space there are multiple options for teaming up and doing battle. Besides doing regular questsions, there's another mode called fleet actions:

They're not exactly like a raid, they're more like those public quests in Warhammer I think.
There are starbases that you can visit such as the one near earth and of course DS9:
