Is there a way to get out of having to take a speech class to fulfill your GER? It's sooo stupid to have to take this. I am pretty close to dropping the one I'm in right now. But then that would mean I won't be able to get my degree. How did you manage to make it through the class? How did you do?

Find something you are really interested in. I don't care if it's photography, video games, stamp collecting, whatever. There's something about it that you find interesting. In fact, most topics are interesting once you learn a bit about them. How boring does oil painting seem? But Bob Ross makes it look really interesting and fun and makes you want to do it too. Just communicate your enthusiasm about something, giving a bit of background as to why you find it interesting, the different aspects of it, go into a bit of depth on a few topics, and you're fine. The more comfortable / knowledgeable you are about a topic, the easier it is to talk about. Part of your problem might be that you pick a random topic -- George Washington crossing the Potomac -- and read a few encyclopedia entries on it and then try to give a speech about it. You have no real knowledge, and so you're going to be terribly insecure. Talk about why Half-Life is the greatest game of all time, how it revolutionized the first person shooter genre (go into detail - provided a more in-depth story, provided a more seamless experience without loading screens, the NPCs, etc). Find something that fascinates you, and show people why it does.
