i'll leave my system on for a while, recently i left it on for 4 days while i was away, and it will get the windows has to shut down because of an error thing,or some other bluescreen, sometimes with some .sys file causing the problem. most recently ntfs.sys and ecache.sys. i'll turn it off and try to turn it back on and i will continue to get blue screens until i shut the thing off for a while. like last night i had to wait until this morning and now it appears to be working again until the next blue screen comes.

I dropped $800 and just ordered all this. I already have a nice case I can re-use, and a DVD and DVD-R/W drive. I don't have a monitor anymore so I went cheap, but big.

I didn't see myself going with RAID or a crossfire setup, so the motherboard ended up being pretty cheap. Anyway, I haven't had a PC capable of playing games for more than 3 years. This rig will let me play some CS:S, TF2, and L4D when it comes out. Plus now I can finish HL2.
Any other must play PC games I've missed? Feel free to let me know how much my new PC sucks too, I'm bracing myself.

My fiancée's MBP has been on the fritz lately. She fully charges the battery and then after using for only a short period of time, it will suddenly just turn off. No warning at all. It doesn't do this when plugged in. The battery health is at 69% according to iStat Pro.
The second problem has been happening for a lot longer. Her wireless will often just suddenly drop out. We have two routers, one in N mode and a second one in G mode (for the Wii, so I don't have to sacrifice N speeds on the LAN). She wireless signal will drop out no matter which router she's connected to, while I, with my identical MBP, have 100% strength sitting right next to her. The problem is less of an issue the closer she is to the router, but even still, sometimes with it only 3 feet away it will just drop the connection.
Any suggestion for either of these issues, or is it time to give Apple Care a call? We bought our lappys last in June 2007.
Thanks in advance!

I can't copy large (600MB+) files from windows to anything over the AExt... Seems like it's not an uncommon issue either. You'd think Apple might have a touch better quality control in their firmware, or maybe that's just expecting too much :(

I thought I would post the Soundfont I used to record it... this is a very high quality General MIDI soundfont it will work on Audigy & Xi-Fi cards. It should work on any other card that supports Soundfont (SF2) Format as long as they can load a 240mb soundfont file.

Antec P180:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129154
I don't really *need* a new case, but I this one has the PSU at the bottom and the HDD cages look like they can be pulled out easily to config HDDs. Mid tower, something that makes working on 3.5" HDDs easier. Ones that point the rear of HDD out the side of the case are awesome, also greatly prefer at least 2 120mm fans and PSU at bottom. I just really want to find something cheaper than this one. $135 is way more than I want to spend on a case. I have a Skyhawk aluminum now that isn't bad really, but I just hate putting HDDs in and out. With a long video card and wires everywhere it sucks. I guess I don't move stuff in and out that much. I dunno. =\ I spent hours looking through cases, but if someone knows of a cheaper case that has HDD mounted inward from the side and is otherwise a sufficient midtower I'm all ears.
PSU:
Thermaltake 480w (already own)
Not sure if my current PSU is enough or not. Fairly quiet. I like it. I figure it is enough since I'm going with a midrange CPU and vid. I will have at least 3 HDDs (one of which is SCSI) and probably just one DVD drive. So far it is fine for a 7900GTX (2x power adapters), 4200 X2 939, 3-4 HDDs (one of which is IBM 10k SCSI). I won't get big money selling it used either.

Fujitsu 15k RPM U320 SCSI 74GB. I've been running SCSI for years with an IBM 32GB 10k drive. It's slightly loud, but I don't mind that much. Hopefully this Fujitsu isn't *stupid* loud. I have an Adaptec 29160 U160 card. U160 is still plenty fast for a single drive. I figure this will still make a 10k SATA drive look silly. $155 is also dirt cheap when those Velociraptor drives are $moneyhats$. I am keeping at least two 250GB SATA drives for storage. This is mainly just for C:, boot drive, swap file, and /program files.
Open box 4850 reference design:

I have a 7900 GTX 512MB now, but I think I'll have no problems selling it and getting $50-60 back on it, so why not. I don't need a retail box. I already have plenty of DVI cables. Should be a decent jump in speed. I will probably be buying a 1900x1200 screen soon, but I am happy playing games at lower resolutions and letting it scale.
Asus P5Q Pro:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299
I like a board with heatpipe on the northbridge rather than a fan that will no doubt fail in 2 years. Was going to go with that cheaper Gigibyte D3SL or whatever, but the combo deal with the processor is great ($35 total off).
E8500:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036
Duh. Only a few bucks more than the E8400 right now. Seems like speed/price is about dead even on the two. Not sure I'll overclock since I'd probably need to blow another $40 on a fancy cooler. I'll deal with retail for now. Combo deal with this and the P5Q Pro for $35, so why not.
Blahblah 2x2GB DDR2 800:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134582
I guess memory isn't a big deal. I think there are better deals, but mostly MIR, shady brands, high voltage, etc. I'm not really sold on heat sinks and I like the BGA mount. Call me crazy. It seems like memory is not a big deal these days as far as latency and clock speed, so this looks good enough.

So my brother purchased a premade system refurb from dell, the Inspiron 530. The system is a C2D and the system is lacking on power and we are going to an 8800Gt so we need to do a power supply switch. He had a fairly new PS from an old PC we were just going to switch, but the MB connector is different(old PC was a AMD 2600+). So is this common? I've never noticed the power supply differences maybe I've just been lucky.. I know that some other connectors vary for the board and other hardware, but the actual MB connector is throwing me off. While I don't have it here, I think the MB connection on the Dell had 4 or 8 more pins.
Does dell use a different connector or is this just a change between the boards before I go pick up a new PS at CC? I can't find any info on the PC as to what one they are using.. I also see that they used a special setup for a few years, but I'd assume that this one is using a regular connector since it's outside that time frame? Wiki shows 20 pin connectors and 24, but the c2d all seem to use the same number of pins, so I'm confused.

My dad took a ton of videos while in Alaska and half of them are corrupt and no longer showing up on the SD card. I just tried some other program to recover them but they want $100 for me to now save the files it found. So I know the files are there, but I don't want to pay $100 to do so.
Anything free out there I could try? Tia

If you were me, would you just throw everything away and start over from scratch? The butter, cheese, and eggs had no nasty smells or mold or anything like that. I threw away pretty much anything else in there that could have been bad.

I was thinking about a couple of enhancements it could use though:
1. keep the reply button on the image even after you reply. If you have to go away for a minute, take a call, whatever, then you lose the ability to continue talking to that person
2. It would be cool if it had the option of saving local copies of both the 'in' and 'out' images so you could view them again. Visual chatlogs.
3. It should keep a list of who you've 'talked' to. Not their names or numbers or anything, but maybe like assign everybody a random number and then let people save those random numbers in the app. Then you could contact them again if you both happen to be online. Obviously it would need some of the IM functions like blocking people or whatever, but this girl had really nice paint in her living room, and we had a whole conversation about it, and it would be nice to be able to talk to her again when my wife makes me do that same paint in the kids playroom.
