Rage Will Look Worse on 360 Due to Compression; Doom 4 and Rage Not Likely for Digital Distribution
by Nick Breckon and Chris Faylor, Aug 01, 2008 6:10pm PDTUpdate: In an interview with Shacknews, id's John Carmack reiterated that the Xbox 360 version of Rage will look worse than the PlayStation 3 version.
Carmack said that the uncompressed build of Rage encompasses a terrabyte of data, and that id will need to use a "different type of compression" to fit the game on two dual-layer Xbox 360 DVDs.
When asked whether the difference will be significant, Carmack noted that "hero shots" should look similar, but that Xbox 360 players might find a rock that is more blurry when exploring the periphery of Rage's world.
Original story: id's post-apocalyptic open-world shooter Rage (PC, PS3, 360, Mac) will look worse on Xbox 360 due to the compression needed to fit the game's assets on two DVDs, programmer John Carmack revealed at tonight's QuakeCon keynote.
According to Carmack, the royalty fees to include a third disc in the Xbox 360 version would be so high that it simply isn't a feasible solution, with the programmer hoping for Microsoft to make a concession. He stressed that the issue is merely a storage problem and has nothing to do with the power of the Xbox 360 hardware, while adding that the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray format is Sony's one leg up on the competition.
Carmack also noted his belief that neither Doom 4 or Rage will be digitally distributed online, as id isn't looking into that sort of distribution for its major titles at this point.
During last year's QuakeCon talk, Carmack stated that the PlayStation 3 edition of Rage would ship on a single Blu-ray disc, with the PC and Mac versions likely to arrive in both Blu-ray and DVD form.

Anyone want to say RAGE is probably full of hours of FMV? Maybe someone should try to float that Carmack needs to use procedural textures. That one's always a laugh.
That's what I like about Carmack. He says it like it is. He said that PS3 was harder to program for, and he doesn't mind admitting that DVDs are too small for HD Era games.

We have to pay royalties on having more than 2 discs for X360?
Lost Odyssey was spanned over 4 discs and cost me, the consumer, less than most new release games on it's release. I didn't see them charging more to cover royalties for the extra discs?
Oh well!

I would guess they'll blink on royalties in order to prevent Sony from having the opportunity to call this game a turnover moment in the consoles' life cycle.

Since all pc games are installed onto the hard drive, how is the install size and image quality going to be on that.? I mean, I cant see id selling a game that takes up 1tb of disk space on someones machine, so they are also going to have to shrink the game down to fit onto the dvd format. They are already talking about wanting to do 3 dvd's which is roughly 25gigs of data that would sit on your hard drive in pc form. Thats a lot of hard drive space for a game.

You have your catalog on there, but in terms of newer games - Activision put some of that stuff up there, but EA often goes for the EA Link thing; but also, Valve is working with EA Partners, so it's kind of a big weird soup.
JC: Right now, we are looking at it - for Rage - as the consoles are the most important "legs" that this project is on. It's definitely shipping on PC as well, and we would be willing to entertain different distribution notions on that, but we would probably leave that up to EA's decision on thereabout.
They're the publisher, and they're going to pick out the best way to get this out to the most number of people; and when EA decides that they think that it's going to be better to cut some deal for electronic distribution, and possibly avoid retailers, or whatever, we'll probably take their advice on that.

That's a sick amount of data for any mainstream storage medium to digest. Glad Blu-ray can hold it, but if it takes 300 years to read it, or if every new texture demands a seek time beyond Blu-ray's capabilities to make seamlessly, then it's going to be a real challenge to make for a great experience.
Yes, I realize that there will be compression, but Lord, that's a big baby right there.
First of all, how many DVD's will the PC release be?
Will the PC release only come on bluray discs? WIll it be an option?
Just how big is the PC install? if 16GB is "compressed"
and yea, I can totally see why they would say fuck Digi Distros, its not like I want to wait for 40GB to download, its DEFINITELY faster to just go to the store for that one, holy christ.

Our steam folders are anywhere from 30-80 GB's as it is - and HDD space is only getting cheaper and more affordable. JC really needs to rethink that - get that shit on steam!

Plus depending on how much compression takes place it might not look that bad. I've seen some compressed textures that don't look too far from the orginal. I mean MP3's are compressed songs and I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

the no digital distro talk is just silly though, especially as the game is a ways off. at least it's just a "at this point" meaning they haven't written it off.
the game does look rad though, I love the setting/style

I really wish Fredrick would provide his always wonderful insight to this thread.
its like a game in the desert with cars and shit? or its basically just a tech-demo game and the real games using the tech5 engine will be out in the next 2-4 years...
