40GB PlayStation 3 Model Materializes in Europe, Lacks Backward Compatibility
by Carlos Bergfeld, Oct 05, 2007 10:16am PDTConfirming the torrent of rumors surrounding a cheaper baseline PlayStation 3 SKU, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe unveiled a 40GB stripped down console for European territories today. Retailing for 399 Euros (299 Pounds in the U.K.) beginning October 10, the new model will be the cheapest PS3 SKU available in the region. As predicted, the 40GB model will feature two USB ports rather than four, have no flash card memory slots, and lack any kind of backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 titles. Regarding this last point, the announcement reads: "The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas)." Since later PS3 models used software rather than hardware emulation to support the PS2's game library, it's unusual that this new model would exclude that capability entirely. Sony coupled the announcement with a 100 Euro price drop for the formerly 599 Euro 60GB Starter Pack bundle in European territories, except for the U.K. and Ireland, where the Starter Pack will be replaced by a 349 Pound Value Pack. The now 499 Euro Starter Pack bundle will still contain an extra Sixaxis and two first-party titles and be sold until stocks run out, while the newly introduced Value Pack model for the U.K. and Ireland will only include one Sixaxis in addition to two first-party titles. Though the different global branches of Sony make their own decisions regarding introductions of new SKUs, it's highly unlikely an entirely new model like the 40GB PS3 would remain exclusive to the region. The 80GB SKU debuted earlier this year in Korea, but made its way to North America and other territories shortly thereafter.

Why does Europe always get fucked on console prices? You can get the 80GB with Motorstorm for that price in the US.

Hopefully they will decide to have emulation later on.

How good is the PS3 as a media centre? Obviously you've got Blueray, but is there anything like transcode for X360?

personally i think they're still working on a full software based BC solution, and will release it in the future as a firmware update. i know they want to resell ps2 games over psn like they do now with ps1 games.

I don't remember ever waiting for a price drop and having to sacrifice features as a result. Imagine if when the SNES was out, Nintendo got rid of the second controller port for the sake of making the console cheaper. :/

If Sony simply stuck with the old model and made it better, instead of trying to force BlueRay onto the market and copy the Wii's controller (poorly) they'd probably still being going strong, instead of losing market share to Microsoft by leaps and bounds. If the X-Box hasn't supplanted the PS3 in Europe yet, that's more to do with Microsoft's inaction than Sony's action (though given Europe's propensity to slap Microsoft with suits, it's not that surprising).

On a side note...does the software emulation on the 80GB models support Dragon Quest 8? That game is fairly important to me.

Fewer USB ports, fine. I can get a hub if I need to. No card reader? Fine, I can plug one into the usb ports. No BC? That's just dumb. They should have stayed with the software emulation. This is just further proof that Sony is trying to destroy themselves in the console war. They're firing their missiles straight upward and are shocked when they fall on their own base.

What will fucking suck if your ps3 breaks and you need a replacement and it wont come with BC :(
I don't mind with Nintendo hardware because they build their stuff with quality, my ps2 could go at any minute!
