Free-to-play Happy Wars no longer requires Gold on Xbox 360

Developer Toylogic has released an update to the free-to-play Xbox 360 game Happy Wars, making certain modes available without a Gold membership.

The update lets free users play the single-player modes, including the Story Campaign, Skirmish, and Tutorial stages. It's made a few changes as well. Skirmish used to be called Training, but with its new title comes the ability to earn score, items, and Happy Stars. Items have been given experience point values for upgrades, and various bugs have been fixed.

Happy Wars has over 1.2 million players

Microsoft's first foray into free-to-play on Xbox Live has become something of a success. Today, the developer has revealed that Happy Wars has reached over 1.2 million players worldwide. Given the price of entry is simply an Xbox Live Gold account, it's unsurprising that players would give it a try.

"We put a lot of effort into making a game that would appeal to every type of player, but it is still incredible to see so many join the battle so quickly," game director Yoichi Take said in a press release.

Happy Wars goes free-to-play on Xbox 360

Xbox 360 is finally jumping into the world of free-to-play. The "large-scale multiplayer" action game, Happy Wars, will be launching as a free download to all Xbox Live Gold members, Microsoft has announced.

Of course, being a free-to-play game, there will be tons of microtransactions available within the game. In fact, thousands of "lavish" items will be made available in the Item Shop "to flaunt your originality." In addition, the game promises to be updated regularly with more items and character customization parts.
