Best of 2013: #9 - Rayman Legends

Wii U hasn't had a great year. That's a shame, especially given the quality of the games found on Nintendo's latest console. Ubisoft has always been one of the few third-party publishers to "get" how to make great games for Nintendo systems. Rayman Legends is no exception--even if sluggish sales forced the publisher to make it multi-platform. Although it's no longer a Wii U exclusive, it certainly plays like one, being one of the few games to showcase the unique benefits offered by the GamePad. With Rayman, Ubisoft manages to out-Nintendo Nintendo, who have yet to make a compelling argument themselves.

Rayman Legends coming to PS4 and Xbox One in February

Can Rayman Legends get any prettier? We'll be able to find out next year, when the UbiArt-powered platformer makes its way to PS4 and Xbox One in February.

Ubisoft confirmed the next-gen release at an earnings call today, pointing out that the game has sold about one million units to date so far. While impressive, that's less than what Ubisoft had originally expected.

Rayman Fiesta Run review: getting the runs

Rayman: Fiesta Run on iOS and Android on November 7

Rayman: Fiesta Run on iOS and Android on November 7

Ever since taking the franchise 2D, Ubisoft has turned its Rayman series into glorious cartoon showcases. Rayman Legends was a tremendous success (critically, anyway), as was last year's Jungle Run--a mobile endless-runner that won Best iPhone Game from Apple.

Fiesta Run follows the footsteps of Jungle Run, offering 75 new levels across four worlds. And yes, it's powered by UbiArt once again, ensuring prettiness through-and-through. It'll be available on iDevices and Android on November 7, for $2.99.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends selling below expectations

Two of Ubisoft's big releases have performed below expectations, the company has stated during an investor's call. The next fiscal year forecast was revised due to the delays of Watch Dogs and The Crew, but Ubisoft acknowledged that missing targets for Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends played a role too.

Rayman Legends review: masterful platforming

Rayman Legends review: masterful platforming

Rayman Legends is a sequel to Rayman Origins, Ubisoft's critically acclaimed 2D platformer. By simply offering "more of the same," the game would instantly merit a recommendation. However, Ubisoft does something truly special with Legends. Not only does it feature the same thrilling platforming experience as its predecessor, Legends does much more, offering surprising new gameplay experiences--especially with the Wii U GamePad.

Origins surprised gamers with deep platforming gameplay, hidden underneath the eye-catching graphics rendered by the UbiArt Framework. Rayman managed to be the Sonic successor fans have long clamored for, with a heavy focus on speed and, more importantly, momentum. Levels in Rayman are designed to be played in one continuous flow, with enemies being creative platforms to use--not necessarily threats to be vanquished.

Rayman Legends for Wii U to include Mario & Luigi costumes

Rayman Legends for Wii U to include Mario & Luigi costumes

Hey Nintendo fans, stop feeling so betrayed by Ubisoft's decision to delay Rayman Legends on your platform. Sure, it may no longer be exclusive to your console, but it's clear that the game is still best played co-op with the GamePad.

And like so many other third-party games on the platform, Ubisoft is channeling the power of first-party collaboration. Yes, you'll be able to play the game with Mario & Luigi costumes. Do you feel less betrayed, bitter Nintendo fan? (And, this sure as heck beats the confusing pre-order bonus the Wii U version gets.)

SmartGlass not 'popular' or 'responsive' enough for Rayman Legends

SmartGlass not 'popular' or 'responsive' enough for Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is one of the best examples of how compelling multi-screen gaming can be. Originally a Wii U exclusive, the Ubisoft platformer takes advantage of the GamePad in clever and engrossing ways.

However, with the move to multi-platform development, wouldn't it be possible to recreate the same multi-screen gameplay on Xbox 360 with SmartGlass? Series creator Michel Ancel told us no. "It's not as responsive as we need to," Ancel explained, adding: "it's not very popular today."

Rayman Legends includes 'remastered' levels from Rayman Origins

Rayman Legends includes 'remastered' levels from Rayman Origins

Rayman Legends includes an incredible bonus: most of Rayman Origins.

About 40 levels from Origins will make a reappearance in Legends as part of an unlockable "Back to Origins" chapter. According to series creator Michel Ancel, the team wanted to include this bonus because "Rayman Origins doesn't exist on Wii U." He told us "it's a way for those players to play the game in HD. And because it was already done, we gave them away for free."

Rayman Legends wouldn't sell enough on Wii U, says Ubisoft

Rayman Legends wouldn't sell enough on Wii U, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft's decision to delay Rayman Legends to September and release on other platforms was simple, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. The Wii U version alone wasn't going to sell enough copies. The reasoning isn't surprising, but hearing such candid confirmation is a bit more unusual.
