Obsidian has returned to the site of Project Eternity's first screenshot for a proper in-motion look at the crowdfunded retro RPG's pre-rendered backgrounds. These aren't your younger self's pre-rendered backgrounds, oh no, as they're jazzed up with shiny tech like dynamic lighting and water which can ebb and flow.

Obsidian and inXile are awfully chummy, with a shared history going back to Interplay and Black Isle Studios, close enough that they want to lend members like a cup of sugar. Both Californian studios are making crowdfunded Unity-based old-school RPGs too, and so are putting their heads together. inXile today announced that they'll be collaborating on tools and tech with each other.

Part of the lure of Kickstarter for developers is that they're free from the demands of publishers, able to make whatever they want, however they want, for as long as they want, and own it all. Publishers, unsurprisingly, may want in on this crowd-funding lark. Obsidian Entertainment, now riding high on its own smash-hit Kickstarter Project Eternity, has said that several publishers had approached Obsidian to front a campaign then join up with them to publish it.

For those who'd like to know more about Obsidian's old-school RPG, codenamed 'Project Eternity,' before Kickstarting it, the Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol developer has shared new details on making your own character, forming a party, and more. It's also for, you know, those who already helped the game blast past its funding goal, and who are now hoovering up all information to sustain them for the long, long wait before it's released.

Obsidian Entertainment's recently announced Project Eternity has gotten RPG fans buzzing about the new game, so much so that the company blew through the $1.1 million barrier it was seeking a mere 30 hours after its Kickstarter campaign launched.
The old-school RPGs get a lot of love on Shacknews, so I cornered Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart and threatened to put him in a bag of holding if he didn't answer a few quick questions for us. He said they had been thinking about the game for while, but didn't want to do a Dungeons & Dragons rule-set game this time.

After four days of teases and speculation, Obsidian Entertainment has unveiled Project Eternity as its newest RPG in development. It is looking for $1.1 million on Kickstarter for a game that pays homage to the old Infinity Engine games we loved from the days of Black Isle Studios.

Good morning, Shack. We'll kick the morning off right with an "I was wrong." I had speculated in yesterday's column that the new Obsidian game teased on their site was Dungeon Siege 4 based on the icon of a dragon eating its tail surrounding the number four. But it was indeed a countdown timer Obsidian is using to prepare for an announcement sometime on Friday. Speculation now revolves around a new IP, based on some Xs and dots embedded in the source of the page. No more guessing for me, but if I do turn out to be right, I will gloat later.

Good morning, Shack, and happy Tuesday. I want to kick things off by pointing you too the latest juicy tidbits on Blizzard Entertainment from author David Craddock. For those who have been focusing more on NWS stuff instead of cool stories, David has teamed up with Shacknews to release new Blizzard stories every Monday to tease the upcoming week of content we will have on October 29 to help promote his book, Stay Awhile and Listen. In this latest entry, we find that Blizzard North seriously considered creating a Sports Division, and that the studio formerly known as Condor could have had a different owner.
Be sure to tune in for a new episode of Real Game Developers of California next week.

It's not much to go on, but Obsidian Entertainment is teasing a new RPG on their company web site. Seen in the cryptic tease is the number 4 and some obscure text about the Dirge of Eir Glanfath. Seeing as Obsidian worked on Dungeon Siege 3 for Square Enix, it isn't much of a stretch that the 4 could mean the next installment to the fantasy RPG series.

Many designers have flocked to Kickstarter in an attempt to revive old gaming franchises. Obsidian's Chris Avellone, lead designer of Planescape: Torment, is interested in creating a "spiritual successor" to the the series.
His game would "ignore the D&D mechanics and respect what Planescape was trying to do and what the game did and see if you can do what Fallout did when it became the spiritual successor to Wasteland."

Fans of the classic single-player Star Wars RPGs may be in for a treat soon, as it appears that a "Knights of the Old Republic Collection" is incoming. Two separate retailers have listed the set, which would presumably include both KotOR and KotOR II: The Sith Lords. The collection has only been listed for the PC.

Hyperviolence was all the rage at this year's E3. However, only one hyperviolent game could take the crown. The Game Critics Awards have finally been determined, and Naughty Dog has come on top with The Last of Us. Its strong performance pushed PS3 to the top of the heap, with PS3 as the most-winning platform. Sony Computer Entertainment is the most-winning publisher as well, with 7 awards.
