MLB 14: The Show PS4 video shows off 10x polygon increase

MLB 14: The Show is excellent on PS3. But many baseball fans are undoubtedly waiting for the PS4 version, coming next month. It's going to look better--but by how much? A new video of the PS4 version shows us.

Game designer Ramone Russell explains that the PS4 version implements a new lighting engine. In addition, polygon count has been increased nearly tenfold. However, this is probably the most impressive stat: there are over a thousand unique character crowd models, meaning sports games no longer have to be attended exclusively by clones.

MLB 14: The Show PS3 review: going to the fence

MLB 14: The Show PS3 review: going to the fence

Without 2K Sports' MLB 2K series to stand in the way, Sony could have simply plastered the number "14" on the box and called it a day. Instead, Sony San Diego has improved upon the series in all the right ways, adding upon the significant changes introduced in last year's game.

While the PS4 version will undoubtedly look better, the PS3 version of MLB 14: The Show continues to capture the genuine thrill of the game--and that's what will count for the fans.

MLB 14: The Show and NBA 2K14 bundled on PS3, offers $10 savings

MLB 14: The Show and NBA 2K14 bundled on PS3, offers $10 savings

If you like sports, chances are you enjoy more than one of them. That's why we don't say "sport" in singular terms like they do in regions where they only like cricket or "futbol." As a result, there is probably some crossover between fans of basketball and baseball, and Sony and 2K are counting on that for a bundle they've produced that crosses the sporting streams.

How MLB 14: The Show speeds up America's pastime

How MLB 14: The Show speeds up America's pastime

Improving on a well-regarded sports experience is an arduous task for just about any studio, but it's a challenge that Sony San Diego relishes with every new iteration of its hit franchise MLB The Show. The challenge is even greater this year, as MLB 14: The Show marks the series' debut on PlayStation 4. But Sony San Diego looks to be up to the task, not only taking advantage of the new console's power, but also implementing some new ideas that will enhance the overall gameplay experience.

Even the most avid baseball fans will admit that the game can get pretty slow. On average, a baseball game will run about three hours with more marquee matchups (Yankees/Red Sox, for example) exceeding the four-hour mark. A baseball video game is no different, but Sony's San Diego studio is going into this year's The Show with some new ideas to help America's pastime move just a little bit faster.

Sony San Diego cannot 'dilute' MLB The Show experience by working on other sports

Sony's San Diego studio is known for their quality work on the MLB The Show series. Year after year, critics have called it the best baseball game in the biz, beating Take-Two's MLB 2K series. However, that wasn't the only sports franchise that called San Diego its home. The studio also worked on NBA The Inside, a series that disappeared after its 2008 release.
