Spoiler-Talk: Mass Effect 3 and the future of the franchise

Spoiler-Talk: Mass Effect 3 and the future of the franchise

In Spoiler-Talk, we take a no-holds-barred look at some of the biggest games and discuss what the future holds for these franchises. Expect many, many spoilers.

One of the most talked about games of 2012 was Mass Effect 3. BioWare made good on its promise to finish the fight and end the trilogy and finish Shepard's story. Unfortunately, many fans were disappointed by the ending--so much so that one fan even filed a complaint with the FTC. The controversy forced BioWare to go back and make an "Extended Cut" of the ending, one that promised to "give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3."

Field Report: Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC

Field Report: Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC

Throughout my return to this den of inequities, I couldn't shake the feeling as I played through Mass Effect 3's new Omega DLC that what I was doing didn't matter. I've already saved the universe and dealt with the consequences of all that entails, so everything on the spire-like trading hub of Omega felt superfluous. It seems the designers felt the same way, too, because anything new was either negated by the time I reached the anticlimactic final showdown or wasn't very important to begin with. I leveled up a few times and maxed out my sticky grenade skill by mission's end, but because I have no intention of returning to Earth again with this save file, having asari crime boss Aria T'loak's war assets at my disposal didn't mean all that much.

Next Mass Effect 3 DLC has 'all hands on deck'

Mass Effect 3 has already had quite a few expansions, and the most recent title, "Omega," had a sense of finality to it. But BioWare isn't quite done telling Shepard stories yet, as the company apparently has a large chunk of its writing staff hard at work on the next one.

Field Report: Mass Effect PS3

Today, PS3 owners will be able to get their hands on a long-awaited port: the original Mass Effect. After years of being exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC, the port can be purchased as part of the Mass Effect Trilogy at retail, or as a standalone $15 download on the PlayStation Store.

We had a quick test of the retail version of the game, just to see how the Edge of Reality-developed port stands up.

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition (Wii U) review

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition (Wii U) review

Note: Portions of this review have been republished from our review of Mass Effect 3 played on Xbox 360.

For many Nintendo fans, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition is not the end of trilogy--it is the first foray into BioWare's compelling sci-fi franchise. Whereas many players have spent countless hours customizing their Shepard, building alliances, and recruiting (and losing) squad mates along the way, Wii U players must jump into the Mass Effect universe unequipped with this knowledge, this personal connection.

BioWare's concession is Genesis 2, an updated version of the interactive prequel comic that shipped with the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. This choose-your-own-adventure has the daunting task of summarizing not only the first game, but the larger second game as well. Given the sheer amount of content that needs to be covered, it's unsurprising that the comic does a poor job of summarizing the games, reducing memorable decisions into simple, broad "Yes or No" questions.

Next Mass Effect won't star a 'Shepard 2'

Next Mass Effect won't star a 'Shepard 2'

The mysterious next Mass Effect game, whatever it may be, won't be a character who's essentially a "Shepard 2," BioWare has said. No, whoever takes those next steps in the franchise will be a different type of character in a different context, not another mere space-soldier. Beyond that small nugget of information, though, there's still everything to speculate and pontificate upon.
