Mass Effect: Andromeda Will Have 'Meaningful' Side Quests

Expect quests more like The Witcher, and less like Dragon Age Inquisition.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is said to have lengthier, story-heavy sidequests that takes some cues from its BioWare's competition at CD Projekt Red.

Producer Fabrice Condominas said that CD Projekt Red has done a good job in that area with its Witcher series, while Dragon Age Inquisition was learning experience. "We are approaching the completionist aspect very differently, because we've done and learned a lot from Inquisition," he told PC Gamer. "But we've also observed what other games have been doing, like The Witcher."

He also noted what many players have felt when grinding through non-essential quests–bigger is not always better, and that "meaningful" side quests keep the player engaged better. "And it was very important for us that the quantity of scope doesn't downgrade the quality of whatever your are doing there."

The comparison to The Witcher is significant, because its detailed and world-building sidequests were a common point of praise among fans and critics alike. And to that end, The Witcher 3 was named Shacknews' 2015 Game of the Year.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is coming on on March 21 on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Sure, that's what you told me about ME3's ending.

And then I waited, bought the game on deep discount after patches were made and it was pretty good. I didn't feel like my choices were all that meaningless at that point so...okay maybe I should believe you.

I dont know why people thought there would be 75040 different endings based on hundreds of choices you made during the game. many of those choices made differences later in the game, just not at the very end of it.

This is what surprised me about Witcher, so much content that didn't feel throw away

Nice to see other developers, especially ones working on their own AAA RPGs, call out The Witcher devs for doing it right and trying to take cues from that.

Hard to say how it will shake out, but this is the first thing I've heard in regards to the new Mass Effect that has me somewhat interested. Pure skepticism and anti-hype before.

I finally bought Dragon Age Inquisition after 2 years of saying "That game looks like shit."

Turns out it's shit. It has cooled me considerably on MEA, and I wasn't particularly warm to it to begin with.

Comparing themselves to Witcher 3 is the right way to get me interested, but it seems a little dangerous to draw direct comparisons to something that good.

They may compete in 5 years, but not now

I'll believe it when I see it. Bioware have burned any trust I had in them.
