To make amends, developer Amanita Design has whipped together an apology package for those who pre-ordered, with treats including Machinarium.

The size and state of the PC digital distribution market can be difficult to assess, as platforms and publishers are largely unwilling to share their sales figures. When it comes to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, though, there can be little doubt about where they all stand, as CD Projekt today revealed the RPG's first six months of digital sales figures.
Who came out on top? Steam, by a huge margin, followed by CD Projekt's own Good Old Games.

Digital distributors already regularly offer mega-savings on PC games but GamersGate intends to take things one step further. Yesterday it announced plans for 'FreeGames,' a "free-to-play ad supported platform for PC and Mac games."
FreeGames will let users download and play games for free, in return for simply watching a "short" advert when the game launches. You'll be limited to having only five free games on your account at any one time, but GamersGate does cryptically mention there'll be "the capability to add additional game." No details on how that'll work, not yet. Read more »

Weekends are, of course, for buying discount digitally-distributed PC games so we've rounded up the best bargains going, including a monster RPG sale at GamersGate that includes Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 for $15 apiece and Torchlight for $5.
Of particular note is indie developer Amanita's Machinarium 'Pirate Amnesty' which sees the adventure game reduced to $5 in the hope of guilting the estimated 85-95% of players who pirated the game into buying it. The splendid soundtrack's included too. Read more »

Sega has revealed the second batch of eleven Sega Genesis "classics" it's releasing for download on PC, a list including Ecco Jr, Kid Chameleon, Ristar and Sonic Spinball.
As with the first batch, it's debatable whether some of these are "classics" but they're only $2.99 each and each is sure to stir up misty childhood memories for someone. Read more »

A dispute between digital distribution platforms Direct2Drive and Impulse over market share has highlighted the difficulty of assessing the digital market and become a wee bit snippy, with Direct2Drive calling Impulse's estimates "misinformation at best."
Stardock had estimated in its 2009 consumer report that Valve's Steam held 70% of the market by dollars generated while Impulse sat in second place with a 10% share, and all others--including the IGN-owned Direct2Drive--shared the remaining 20%. Read more »
