Insomniac's Outernauts to be a franchise

Insomniac's Facebook game Outernauts won't just be a one-and-done affair, according to the developer. The game's head says that Insomniac has a history of making franchises, and this is just the latest example of one that it hopes to continue well into the future.

"Insomniac builds franchises," said lead designer Rowan Belden-Clifford, "so don't expect Outernauts to be going away anytime soon."

Insomniac tries social gaming with 'Outernauts'

Insomniac Games has announced its next title, and it's a far cry from the studio's core games like the Resistance and Ratchet franchises. Outernauts is the company's first social game, currently in closed beta and set to launch on Facebook this summer. It seems a bit more complex than your average social game, though, offering adventure and role-playing elements.

'Empire' Facebook game chronicles Jay-Z's life

Facebook games run the gamut from annoying click-fests to somewhat less annoying click-fests, but most don't attempt to be set in the documentary style. A new Facebook game called "Empire" changes that by loosely chronicling the life and times of one Shawn Carter. Better known as Jay-Z.

The Sims Social gets more Unilever product placement

The Sims Social gets more Unilever product placement

The Sims Social on Facebook is due for some more in-game product placement, thanks to a one-year deal Electronic Arts has inked with product-purveyor Unilever. Back in January, The Sims Social saw a number of Dove brand hair-care products make their way into the game by way of a virtual Dove Hair Spa that netted players some bathroom upgrades and a "Care & Repair with Dove Hair Therapy shower feature" that yielded "Bling" and "Love" to those who interacted with it. What's next? Some brand-name ice cream adver-items, apparently.

Ghost Recon: Commander coming to Facebook

Ghost Recon: Commander coming to Facebook

Facebook tie-in games for triple-A releases were all the rage a couple of years ago, but fewer publishers seem to be putting time into them nowadays. Ubisoft is keeping the faith, though, with a new Facebook game titled Ghost Recon: Commander, which will connect with the upcoming Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

John Romero and Brenda Brathwaite's studio Loot Drop is working on the game. Brathwaite is serving as lead designer.

Sony considers introducing more IPs via social and mobile platforms

Sony considers introducing more IPs via social and mobile platforms

Now that we're in an age where the prevalence and reach of social media platforms and smart phones is inescapable, it seems as though Sony is now openly discussing the possibility of using some of those platforms as catapults to introduce or supplement new intellectual properties. The idea--less of a revelation and more so a blinding flash of the obvious--continues to be shunned by Nintendo, however, which is determined to keep all of its IPs relegated to its own platforms.

Facebook for Vita pulled from PlayStation Store

The PS Vita is arguably the most powerful handheld ever created, with the ability to play games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss. But, there's one thing Sony's handheld can't quite do right now: access Facebook.

A standalone Facebook app was readied for the Vita's official launch earlier this week, but it's since been pulled since users discovered that it simply didn't work.

The Hunger Games Facebook game in the works

Mandatory teenaged death battles might not be the first thing that comes to mind as source material for a social game, but it's probably not an intuitive fit for a PG-13 movie or a young adult novel either. The book is being adapted into a film, and now the film is getting its own video game tie-in. Titled "The Hunger Games Adventures," the Facebook game will launch on March 23, alongside the movie.

[UPDATE 1/30/12 10:05am] Harmonix sent over this brief response on the matter: "As we've stated before, our studio is growing and hard at work on a variety of titles. In a storied Harmonix tradition, our designers start working on those games before they're publicly announced. We're excited to confirm more information soon, probably via a LinkedIn update or something - we haven't decided."

Gaikai to stream games on Facebook

Related Topics – Gaikai, Facebook, PC

The term "Facebook game" often gets used in a disparaging way by gamers to describe the social/casual games proliferated on the network. But what if you could play serious, hard core PC games--or at least their demos--on Facebook? That's the question Dave Perry says his cloud gaming service Gaikai will answer. It's not a hypothetical either. Gaikai has an agreement in place, and is on its way to Facebook.
